The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 continues on Sunday with one of the most interesting opening group games as Afghanistan meet New Zealand in Group D at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Both sides have plenty riding on this fixture with early points in a group that also includes South Africa and Canada. Afghanistan arrive after enjoying some strong pre-tournament performances, while New Zealand are eager to shake off a challenging run of results and health issues ahead of their campaign. Before the first ball in Chennai, continue reading to get my Afghanistan vs New Zealand prediction.
Pick: Afghanistan to win ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
This Group D encounter marks the first outing for both Afghanistan and New Zealand in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Afghanistan’s recent T20 form has been impressive. They registered wins in warm-up matches and secured a series win over West Indies, building confidence heading into this tournament fixture. Their spin attack, led by Rashid Khan and supported by Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad, is ideally suited to the surfaces typically seen in Chennai. Their batting order, anchored by consistent performers like Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, gives them balance at the top.
New Zealand are facing several challenges. A recent T20 series saw them lose four of five games, and illness and injury have disrupted their preparations. Key batters such as Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway were sidelined in warm-up fixtures, although management remains hopeful about their return for this match. With Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman in the batting line-up, the Black Caps have quality options but may lack match rhythm compared to Afghanistan. Their bowling unit includes spin from Ish Sodhi and left-arm variety from Mitchell Santner, but exploiting conditions at Chepauk will require precision.
These teams have split their limited T20I history, with their most recent World Cup clash in 2024 seeing Afghanistan beat New Zealand by a commanding margin. That result not only provides a psychological edge to Afghanistan but also leaves New Zealand keen to reverse that memory and make a strong start here.
Afghanistan (probable): Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan (capt), Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad
New Zealand (probable): Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner (capt), Michael Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi
Score Projection: Afghanistan 175 – New Zealand 168 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Afghanistan 54%, New Zealand 46% ATS PRO
This match has all the ingredients of a fascinating opening group clash, with spin bowlers likely to decide the contest and both teams eager for a strong start. While markets show the Black Caps as slight favourites, Afghanistan’s recent form and strengths on spin-friendly tracks give them a genuine shot at victory. For bettors looking at this game, I recommend backing Afghanistan, with a closely fought game shaping up in Chennai.
