Western Kentucky heads to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston in a Wednesday night Conference USA matchup. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, with the game airing on ESPN.
WKU (2-4, 1-1 CUSA) is coming off a convincing 34-13 win over Missouri State, while Sam Houston (1-4, 0-1 CUSA) is looking to bounce back from a 35-3 loss to Liberty last week.
Despite those results, I like Sam Houston +1.5 at home in this one. Below, I'll break down why I see value in taking the points with the Bearkats and take a closer look at the key matchups and storylines heading into Wednesday night's game.
Polymarket Pricing
Sam Houston +1.5 is currently trading at 52¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives it a 56.9% chance of covering. That gives us a 4.9% edge at the current price, with the model projecting a 27-22 Sam Houston win outright.
WKU's Defensive Struggles
Western Kentucky is allowing 35.2 points (132nd nationally) and 408 total yards per game (121st), including 204 rushing yards (128th). While matchups against Georgia and Indiana have contributed to those numbers, the Hilltoppers have struggled defensively against lesser competition, too.
Strength of Schedule and Road Record
Sam Houston has faced the tougher schedule according to Sagarin's rankings (76th vs. 101st), making its 1-4 record a bit misleading. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky has lost six straight road games under head coach Tyson Helton and is making its fifth road trip in seven weeks.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Landyn Locke and this Sam Houston offense should put up plenty of points against a WKU defense that's struggled all season. I also expect a focused effort from the Bearkats at home after back-to-back blowout losses to Texas Tech and Liberty, while WKU faces yet another road trip. Give me Sam Houston +1.5, though I think the Bearkats win this one outright.”
Western Kentucky picked up its first conference win of the season last Thursday, beating Missouri State 34-13 at home. The Hilltoppers finished with 464 total yards, including 233 rushing, and converted 9 of 17 third downs while holding the Bears to just 13 points.
Quarterback Brock Glenn threw for 231 yards and a touchdown while adding 95 rushing yards and another score. Running back Ajay Allen also had a big night, rushing for 105 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries, while freshman receiver Jonathan Stafford Jr. caught six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.
It was easily one of WKU's best performances of the season, and the Hilltoppers will look to build on it Wednesday as they try to stay in the Conference USA title race.
Sam Houston's offense has shown some promise this season, but the results haven't always followed. The Bearkats are averaging just 22.8 points per game and have failed to score more than 21 points against an FBS opponent this year.
Quarterback Landyn Locke threw for over 300 yards in each of his first three starts, but he's cooled off recently. He threw for 195 yards and two interceptions against Texas Tech before finishing with 138 passing yards and no touchdowns in last week's 35-3 loss to Liberty.
The running game hasn't helped much, either. Sam Houston is averaging just 101 rushing yards per game and 3.3 yards per carry this season, putting even more pressure on Locke and the passing game to move the ball.
Western Kentucky has struggled away from home dating back to last season, losing six straight true road games since its last road win at Louisiana Tech in October 2025. Four of those losses have come this season, and none have been particularly close.
The Hilltoppers opened 2026 with a 49-14 loss at Nevada, followed by a 70-20 loss to Georgia and a 38-0 shutout against Indiana. They also fell 34-13 at New Mexico State earlier this month, meaning they've lost their four road games this season by an average of 36 points.
To be fair, Georgia and Indiana were both ranked in the top five, but the losses to Nevada and New Mexico State are harder to excuse.
Third downs could play a big role in Wednesday's matchup. Sam Houston has converted just 34.6% of its third-down attempts this season, while WKU's defense is allowing opponents to convert 37.5% of the time.
The bigger matchup, though, comes when Western Kentucky has the ball. The Hilltoppers are converting 41.3% of their third downs, but they'll face a Sam Houston defense that's allowing opponents to convert just 31.7% (13th nationally).
With this game priced as essentially a pick'em, Sam Houston's ability to get off the field on third down could be a deciding factor.
I like Sam Houston to pick up its first win over an FBS opponent this season and hand Western Kentucky its fifth road loss in as many games.
The underlying numbers favor Sam Houston more than the records suggest. The Bearkats rank 71st in offensive EPA per play and 64th defensively, compared with WKU at 127th and 109th, respectively. Sam Houston also has the better offensive success rate (46.5% vs. 42.5%), and its pass defense should match up well against WKU's passing attack.
There's a little revenge angle here, too, after WKU beat Sam Houston 41-24 in Bowling Green to open last season.
My final score prediction is Sam Houston 31, Western Kentucky 21, making the Bearkats +1.5 my preferred play. That said, Under 53.5 is another option worth considering, based on what our model likes best in this matchup.
