The Apple Cup arrives early in 2026, as the Washington State Cougars travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies on Sunday, September 6. For the first time in the long history of the rivalry, Washington and Washington State will open their seasons against one another. That creates an intriguing environment for two programs entering the year with very different expectations. Washington begins the season nationally ranked and heavily favored at home, while Washington State starts a new era under head coach Kirby Moore with significant roster turnover.
Our prediction for Washington State vs Washington is Under 50.5. Washington has a significant talent advantage on paper, but a large Huskies victory does not necessarily require this game to turn into a shootout. Washington State enters the season with uncertainty at quarterback and several new pieces on offense, creating the possibility that the Cougars struggle to generate consistent scoring opportunities against a talented Washington defense.
Polymarket currently prices Under 50.5 at 48¢, while Over 50.5 is priced at 53¢. That gives the Under a slightly cheaper entry point in a matchup that could become relatively one-sided. Washington may be able to control possession, protect a lead, and reduce the number of possessions late in the game. A score somewhere in the range of 34-13 or 31-14 would comfortably favor Washington while also keeping the game below the total.
Opening a season with an intense rivalry creates a completely different challenge than beginning against a lower-profile nonconference opponent. There is little opportunity for either coaching staff to experiment or gradually work new players into significant roles.
That could be especially important for Washington State. Moore will make his Cougars coaching debut in one of the most emotional games on the schedule, on the road against a nationally ranked opponent. Early mistakes, penalties, and turnovers could become magnified in that type of environment.
Washington State brought in transfer quarterback Caden Pinnick after an impressive freshman season at UC Davis, but the Cougars still enter 2026 without much proven experience at quarterback at the FBS level. Pinnick has upside, yet facing Washington in Husky Stadium represents a major jump in difficulty.
The Cougars return only four offensive starters from last season and added a large group of transfers. Developing offensive chemistry could therefore take time. Washington State may lean heavily on its running game and shorter throws early, which would also support a slower-paced contest and the Under 50.5.
Washington enters the year ranked No. 17 in the preseason AP Top 25 and No. 19 in the coaches poll. Jedd Fisch is now entering his third season leading the Huskies, giving Washington considerably more continuity than its rival.
Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. also provides Washington with an experienced centerpiece offensively. The Huskies should have the advantage in overall roster depth, and playing the opener at Husky Stadium only increases expectations that Washington will control the matchup.
The Apple Cup dates all the way back to 1900, when Washington and Washington State played to a 5-5 tie. Washington has historically controlled the series, holding a 77-34-6 advantage entering the 118th meeting between the programs.
Recent games have shown that the rivalry can still produce surprises. Washington State won 24-19 at Lumen Field in 2024, while Washington has continued to hold the historical advantage. Now the rivalry enters another unusual chapter. Conference realignment has changed the relationship between the programs, and the September 6 meeting will be the earliest Apple Cup ever played and the first to serve as the season opener for both teams.
