The Kennesaw State Owls travel to Springfield, Missouri, to face the Missouri State Bears on Wednesday night in a Conference USA matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Robert W. Plaster Stadium, with the game airing on CBS Sports Network.
Both teams enter at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Kennesaw State has lost four straight, including a narrow 27-26 defeat to Jacksonville State last week, while Missouri State has now dropped three in a row following its 34-13 loss to Western Kentucky.
Despite their recent struggles, I like Missouri State +3.5 as a home underdog in this matchup. Below, I'll break down why I see some value in taking the points with the Bears, along with a full game preview and the key matchups and storylines to watch Wednesday night.
Polymarket Pricing
Missouri State +3.5 is currently trading at 54¢ on Polymarket, implying a 54% chance of covering the number. Our ATS Quantitative Model gives the Bears a 58.5% chance of covering, creating a 4.5% edge at the current price.
Kennesaw State's Inconsistent Offense
The Owls are averaging just 22.6 points per game and have thrown only three touchdown passes through five games. They've also scored 17 or fewer points in three of their four games against FBS opponents. That's not an offense I necessarily trust to win comfortably as a road favorite.
Recent Close Losses
Kennesaw State has lost its last two games by a combined four points, falling 17-14 to Arkansas State and 27-26 to Jacksonville State. The Owls have been competitive but haven't been able to finish games, and another close contest would favor Missouri State getting 3.5 points at home.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“I think you're still paying a bit of a premium on Kennesaw State because of its Conference USA championship last season, even though this year's team hasn't looked nearly as impressive. That creates some value on Missouri State, especially at home on national television. After an ugly loss to Western Kentucky last week, I expect the Bears to come out motivated and keep this one close.”
Both Kennesaw State and Missouri State enter Wednesday at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play, making this an important matchup for two teams trying to avoid falling further behind in the Conference USA Championship race.
Kennesaw State has been competitive lately, falling 17-14 to Arkansas State before losing 27-26 to Jacksonville State on a last-minute field goal. Missouri State, meanwhile, is coming off an ugly 34-13 road loss to Western Kentucky, though the Bears did show some fight in a much closer-than-expected 34-24 loss at SMU the game before that.
The Owls have won both previous meetings between these programs, including a 41-34 victory last season. Missouri State put up 535 yards of offense in that game, however, and will now look to pick up its first win in the series.
Kennesaw State's offense showed some improvement against Jacksonville State last week, putting up 410 total yards and 26 points. Quarterback Rickie Collins led the way with 293 passing yards, 61 rushing yards, and two total touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions.
Through five games, the Syracuse transfer has completed 68.7% of his passes for 1,042 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He's also added 246 rushing yards and four scores, giving the Owls a dual-threat option under center.
Wide receiver Brayden Munroe also had a big game against Jacksonville State, catching seven passes for 159 yards. Still, Kennesaw State needs to find more consistency offensively if it's going to turn those improved numbers into wins.
Missouri State has a pair of talented receivers in Isaiah Myers and Jmariyae Robinson, who have been two of the Bears' most reliable offensive weapons this season.
Myers has been the bigger deep-ball threat, leading the team with 419 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 20 catches. He's averaging an impressive 20.95 yards per reception and has caught a touchdown in three of his last four games.
Robinson, meanwhile, has 19 catches for 134 yards in four games, including seven receptions against Western Kentucky last week. He's also just three catches away from breaking Missouri State's career receptions record.
The Bears have used both Skyler Locklear and Henry Belin IV at quarterback, but regardless of who's under center Wednesday, Myers and Robinson should remain key parts of the passing attack.
Missouri State's defense has struggled through five games, allowing 32.4 points (120th in FBS) and 449.6 total yards per game (128th). The Bears have been particularly vulnerable against the run, surrendering 196.4 rushing yards per game (124th nationally).
Generating pressure has also been an issue, with Missouri State recording just six sacks and 21 tackles for loss this season. Opponents are also converting 47.8% of their third-down attempts.
One bright spot has been linebacker Jared "Bird" Lloyd, who leads the FBS with 12.0 tackles per game. He recorded 15 tackles against Western Kentucky last week and will be a key player to watch against Rickie Collins and the Owls' offense.
Missouri State returns to Robert W. Plaster Stadium after three straight road games. The Bears are 1-1 at home under first-year head coach Casey Woods, while Kennesaw State is still looking for its first road win of the season at 0-2.
Missouri State also has some encouraging midweek history, going 3-1 in nationally televised weekday Conference USA games. The Bears will have six days between games after facing Western Kentucky last Thursday, compared with seven for Kennesaw State, so neither team has a significant rest advantage.
This should be a competitive Conference USA matchup, with neither team having a clear advantage offensively. One key factor will be whether Missouri State can contain Rickie Collins on the ground while generating a few explosive plays through its own passing attack.
Turnovers could also be important. Missouri State has committed just five turnovers through five games (39th in FBS), and if the Bears can continue protecting the football while forcing a mistake or two from Kennesaw State, they'll have a legitimate chance to pull off the upset.
My score prediction is Kennesaw State 23, Missouri State 21, making Missouri State +3.5 my preferred play. Another option worth considering is Under 51.5, currently trading at 49¢ on Polymarket, which the ATS Quantitative Model's projection for Kennesaw State vs Missouri State also identifies as a potential value play.
