The No. 22 Houston Cougars and No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders open Big 12 play on Friday, September 18, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock. Both teams enter at 2-0, making this an early Top 25 showdown that could have a big impact on the Big 12 title race.
Texas Tech is coming off a Big 12 championship and playoff appearance, but the Red Raiders have had a pretty underwhelming start, including a 35-24 win over Oregon State that was much closer than the final score suggests. Houston, meanwhile, is coming off a 77-6 beatdown of FCS Southern and now faces by far its toughest test of the season.
For our Houston vs Texas Tech prediction, I’m taking Texas Tech -7.5. I’ll break down why I like the Red Raiders to cover, along with the biggest storylines to watch in Friday night’s Big 12 showdown.
ATS Expert Verdict:

“I’ll lay the 7.5 points with Texas Tech on Friday night. The Red Raiders have been nearly impossible to run on, which should force Conner Weigman into obvious passing downs and make Houston more one-dimensional. I also love the home-field advantage here, with Texas Tech riding a nine-game winning streak at Galaxy Stadium. A lot of people seem ready to write the Red Raiders off after the Brendan Sorsby controversy this summer, but I’m not there yet.”
Polymarket Pricing
Texas Tech -7.5 is priced at 50¢ on Polymarket, but our model gives the Red Raiders a 58% chance to cover. That gives us an 8% edge at the current price. Our model also projects a 34-24 Texas Tech win, putting the Red Raiders on the right side of the number.
Texas Tech's Defense Should Be Up for the Challenge
We expect a good game from Shiel Wood's defense here, especially against the run. Texas Tech is allowing just 65 rushing yards per game and still has key pieces like DT A.J. Holmes Jr., LB Ben Roberts and CB Brice Pollock from last year's defense that ranked third nationally in both yards (258.3) and points (11.8) allowed per game.
Houston Has Struggled in This Matchup
The Red Raiders have won seven straight against Houston dating back to 2010 and 11 of the last 12 since 1991. That includes both meetings since Houston joined the Big 12 in 2023, with Texas Tech winning 49-28 in 2023 and 35-11 last season.

With our college football prediction out of the way, let's take a closer look at the matchup. Houston and Texas Tech are both 2-0, but neither has faced a challenge quite like this yet.
Will Hammond wasn't expected to be Texas Tech's starting quarterback this season. The Red Raiders brought in Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby after Hammond tore his ACL late last year, but Sorsby's offseason gambling controversy and eventual departure put the job back in Hammond's hands.
So far, he's made the most of it. Hammond has completed 76.7% of his passes for 487 yards, two touchdowns and one interception through two games. He also flashed plenty of potential before getting hurt last season, throwing for 680 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 299 yards and five scores on the ground.
Houston returns six starters from last year's defense, which allowed just 22.8 points and 347.8 yards per game. Friday should give us a much better idea of what Hammond can do against a quality defense.
One interesting thing about this matchup is that we already have a common opponent: Oregon State. Houston beat the Beavers 33-20 at home in Week 1, with Conner Weigman throwing for 305 yards and Makhi Hughes rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Texas Tech had a much tougher time in Corvallis the following week. The Red Raiders trailed 24-21 in the fourth quarter before Will Hammond found Coy Eakin for a 32-yard go-ahead touchdown with 6:31 left, eventually escaping with a 35-24 win.
So, what can we take from those two games? Neither defense had much success stopping Oregon State through the air, with the Beavers throwing for 376 yards against Houston and 417 against Texas Tech. It'll be interesting to see which secondary holds up better on Friday night.
Houston was much more efficient offensively, averaging 7.4 yards per play compared to 4.8 for Texas Tech. Of course, the Cougars got Oregon State at home, while the Red Raiders had to make the trip to Corvallis.
This should be a good one, and an upset is certainly possible with how little we still know about both teams this early in the season. That said, I’m going with Texas Tech to cover -7.5.
The Red Raiders are at home in front of a sold-out crowd and look like the more talented team overall, especially up front. Their defense led the country in rushing yards allowed last season (68.1 per game), and that physical front seven should be a tough matchup for a Houston offense that has leaned heavily on the run.
It’s also hard to ignore Texas Tech’s recent dominance in this series. The Red Raiders have won seven straight against Houston dating back to 2010, with five of those wins coming by at least 14 points. I think they keep that streak going Friday night.
Prediction: Texas Tech 34, Houston 24
Best Trade: Texas Tech -7.5 at 50¢ (playable up to 57¢)
