Baylor and Auburn open the 2026 college football season with a high-profile matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, September 5. The Aflac Kickoff Game gives both programs an immediate opportunity to make a statement after each finished 5-7 last season. Auburn won last year’s meeting 38-24 in Waco, but both teams enter the rematch with significant changes at quarterback and throughout their rosters.
Our Baylor vs Auburn prediction for Saturday’s matchup is Baylor +7.5. Auburn deserves to be favored, particularly with the offensive continuity created by new head coach Alex Golesh and quarterback Byrum Brown, but more than a touchdown feels like a sizable number for a season opener featuring two heavily revamped teams.
Baylor has enough upside to keep this competitive behind Florida transfer DJ Lagway, while a rebuilt Bears defense could be better equipped to handle Auburn than the unit that surrendered 38 points in last year’s meeting. Polymarket currently prices Auburn at approximately 72% to win the game, compared with 28% for Baylor. That makes Auburn the clear favorite to win outright, but Baylor +7.5 provides some protection if the Bears can keep the game close into the fourth quarter.
The most important matchup could be Auburn’s rushing attack against Baylor’s revamped defensive front. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown is a major dual-threat weapon who already knows Golesh’s system after playing for him at South Florida. Baylor invested heavily in its defensive front through the transfer portal, making this an immediate test of whether those additions can improve a defense that struggled against Auburn’s ground game last season.
On the other side, Lagway will be operating behind a Baylor offensive line replacing four starters. How well that group handles Auburn’s experienced defensive front could determine whether Baylor can consistently create explosive plays.
There may not be many Week 1 games with more potential to alter the direction of two programs. Baylor is entering Dave Aranda’s seventh season after missing a bowl in 2025, while Auburn is beginning another coaching transition.
A victory would immediately create momentum before conference play and provide a quality non-conference win that could become increasingly valuable as the season develops. The loser, meanwhile, would face immediate pressure after opening the year 0-1.
Saturday marks Golesh’s first game as Auburn’s head coach after three seasons at South Florida. His arrival brings a fast-paced offensive philosophy built around running the football, creating tempo and forcing defenses to defend the entire field.
Brown’s decision to follow Golesh from South Florida gives Auburn unusual quarterback-coach continuity for the first game of a new regime. That familiarity could be particularly valuable against a Baylor defense breaking in several new pieces.
Technically, this is a neutral-site game, but Atlanta should provide Auburn with the stronger crowd presence. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is roughly 100 miles from Auburn’s campus, making the trip significantly easier for Tigers fans than for Baylor supporters traveling from Texas.
Still, playing away from Jordan-Hare Stadium removes some of Auburn’s traditional home-field edge. Baylor should be dealing with a less hostile environment than it would encounter on Auburn’s campus, giving the Bears a reasonable opportunity to settle in early and keep the game within one possession.
