The Ottawa Redblacks head to Montreal for a Week 4 East Division showdown against the Montreal Alouettes on June 28. Ottawa enters this Redblacks vs Alouettes game looking to recover from a difficult start after losses to Edmonton and Toronto, while Montreal has spent the opening weeks near the top of the division despite suffering its first defeat of the season against Edmonton in Week 3.
Montreal has been the more consistent club through the first three weeks. The Alouettes opened the year with a dramatic 30-27 victory over Hamilton and followed it with another win before falling 32-29 on the road against Edmonton. Ottawa, meanwhile, dropped a 29-21 decision to Edmonton before allowing 44 points in a Week 3 loss to Toronto.
Montreal enters this game with the stronger overall team. The Alouettes have already shown they can score against quality opponents, posting 37 points against Toronto, 30 points against Hamilton, and 29 against Edmonton. Ottawa's defense has surrendered 73 points across its first two games, and that unit now faces one of the East Division's most productive offenses.
The Redblacks should move the ball. But Montreal's balanced roster and home-field advantage create a favorable situation for the Alouettes. Ottawa is competitive enough to stay within striking distance for much of the evening, yet Montreal's ability to finish drives gives the home team the advantage over four quarters.
The foundation of the parlay is Montreal to win the game. The Alouettes have looked like one of the stronger teams in the East and return home after a closely contested loss in Edmonton. Ottawa has struggled defensively and now faces a capable Montreal offense in a difficult road environment.
The total is also attractive because both teams have participated in high-scoring contests recently. Ottawa has allowed 29 and 44 points in its first two games, while Montreal has scored at least 29 points in all three of its outings. If the Alouettes approach the 30-point mark again, the over becomes highly attainable.
Montreal's offense has been one of the more entertaining units in the CFL through the opening weeks. The Alouettes produced 30 points in their season opener against Hamilton and followed with another strong offensive effort against the Argos before narrowly losing 32-29 to Edmonton in Week 3. Even in defeat, Montreal moved the ball effectively and remained dangerous throughout the contest.
The Redblacks enter this matchup facing questions on the defensive side. Ottawa allowed Edmonton to score 29 points in Week 1 and then surrendered 44 points to Toronto in Week 3. Giving up 73 points across two games is a concerning trend heading into a road game against a Montreal team that has already demonstrated the ability to score against quality competition.
Quarterback play remains the key variable for Ottawa. Jake Meier ranks 9th in the CFL in passing yards so far this season. If Ottawa is going to pull the upset, Meier will likely need his best performance of the season. The Redblacks cannot afford turnovers or stalled drives because Montreal has consistently capitalized on scoring opportunities.
Expect the Redblacks to come out aggressively, knowing an 0-3 start would create a difficult climb in the East Division standings. That urgency should help Ottawa remain competitive during the first half. As the game progresses, however, Montreal's deeper offensive attack and more reliable defense should begin to create separation. Look for the Alouettes to pull away late and secure a victory that keeps them at the top of the East Division.
