The Chicago Sky travel west for the first regular-season game in Portland Fire history on Saturday night. Chicago enters the year having made major roster changes after a disappointing 2025 campaign, while Portland begins life as an expansion franchise, trying to build chemistry quickly. The atmosphere inside Moda Center should give Portland an emotional lift in its debut. Will that be enough for them to get a win? Continue reading for my Sky vs Fire prediction.
My Sky vs Fire Pick
- Pick: Portland Fire +4.5
- Confidence: 3.5 out of 5
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Chicago Sky @ Portland Fire
- Date & Time: Saturday, May 9, 9:00 PM ET
- Venue: Moda Center, Portland, Oregon
- Broadcast: WNBA League Pass
Key Storylines
Chicago enters the opener with one of the league’s most revamped rosters. The Sky moved aggressively in the offseason, adding experienced guards Skylar Diggins and Natasha Cloud while also bringing in versatile scorers like Rickea Jackson and DiJonai Carrington. The organization clearly believes veteran leadership can speed up their return to playoff contention after winning just 10 games last season.
Another major storyline is how quickly Portland can compete in its return to the WNBA. Expansion teams often struggle defensively early in the year because rotations and communication take time to develop. Portland does have intriguing young talent and should benefit from an energized home crowd expected to fill Moda Center for the franchise debut. It will be interesting to see if that is enough to help them here.
Key Players
Portland Fire
- Bridget Carleton gives Portland much-needed perimeter shooting and veteran experience. Her ability to stretch defenses could be critical against a Chicago team that wants to pressure ball handlers aggressively.
- Emily Engstler brings defensive versatility and rebounding for the Fire after a productive spell with the Washington Mystics. Portland will rely on her activity around the basket to slow Chicago’s offense.
- Serah Williams earned a roster spot after averaging 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds during preseason action. The rookie forward adds energy and interior size, and Portland hopes she can become a reliable contributor quickly.
Chicago Sky
- Skylar Diggins immediately becomes the centerpiece of Chicago’s offense. The veteran guard remains one of the league’s best creators and should control the pace in opening night action.
- Natasha Cloud gives the Sky another experienced playmaker who can defend multiple positions. Her arrival upgrades Chicago’s perimeter defense and ball movement.
- Rickea Jackson adds athletic scoring on the wing. Chicago expects her to take on a larger offensive role after showing flashes of elite shot-making ability last season.
- DiJonai Carrington supplies energy and defensive pressure. If fully healthy, she could create major problems for Portland’s inexperienced backcourt.
Head-to-Head & Betting Trends
- This is the first regular-season meeting between these franchises.
- Chicago went 21-23 against the spread last season despite going just 10-34 straight up.
- The under was 22-21-1 in Sky games a season ago.
Sky vs Fire Model Projection
- Score Projection: Chicago Sky 84 – Portland Fire 83
- Win Probability: Chicago Sky 61%, Portland Fire 39%
I think we are in for a highly competitive game between a new franchise and a new-look franchise in the WNBA. The Fire will have their share of growing pains early in the season, but a team like the Sky won’t be immune to those either, given how many changes they made to their roster. I think this is a one-possession game in either direction, so I’ll take the Fire as a home underdog to cover the spread in their first-ever competitive basketball game.
