The Chicago Sky head to Arizona riding early confidence after opening the season with back-to-back victories, while the Phoenix Mercury enter Friday night trying to stop a two-game slide. Phoenix remains one of the most talented veteran groups in the WNBA with Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and DeWanna Bonner leading the way, though the Mercury have struggled defensively through three games. Chicago has looked far more organized than many expected, especially on the defensive side, and will try to improve to 3-0 with a win in this Sky vs Mercury matchup.

Key Storylines
The Chicago Sky has started the season 2-0 and already looks more disciplined defensively than last year. The Sky are allowing only 73 points per game through their first two outings and have done a solid job controlling the glass. Kamilla Cardoso has taken another step as a rebounder and interior scorer, helping to offset the loss of Angel Reese in the offseason.
Phoenix has gone 1-2 in its first three games and remains dangerous offensively, though consistency has been an issue. The Mercury were blown out by Golden State before losing a close game to Minnesota earlier this week. Phoenix still has plenty of shot creation with Copper and Thomas running the offense, but defensive breakdowns and transition issues have been costly.
Key Players
Phoenix Mercury
- Kahleah Copper remains Phoenix’s primary scorer and transition threat. The veteran guard averaged 15.6 points last season and continues to attack downhill aggressively. Her ability to pressure Chicago’s perimeter defense could decide the game.
- Alyssa Thomas is still one of the most complete players in the WNBA. Thomas operates as a point-forward and creates high-quality looks for her Phoenix Mercury teammates regularly.
- DeWanna Bonner gives Phoenix another proven scoring option on the wing. Her length and shooting help stretch defenses, and she remains reliable in late-game situations.
Chicago Sky
- Rickea Jackson is off to a nice start after joining the Sky from the LA Sparks. Jackson is averaging 18.5 points per game through the first two games of the season for Chicago and she will play a key role for the team offensively here as well.
- Kamilla Cardoso has become a major interior presence. She has averaged 10.5 rebounds per game through two games and her size will be a major obstacle for Phoenix to overcome in this inter-conference matchup.
- Natasha Cloud adds veteran stability after joining Chicago earlier this month. Cloud remains one of the league’s better perimeter defenders and playmakers, and her experience against Phoenix could matter in a close game.
Head-to-Head & Betting Trends
- Phoenix has won 7 straight meetings against Chicago.
- The Mercury have won 8 of the last 10 matchups in the series.
- Chicago enters Friday with a 2-0 ATS record this season.
- Phoenix is 1-2 ATS through its first three games.
Sky vs Mercury Model Projection
- Score Projection: Phoenix Mercury 84 – Chicago Sky 81
- Win Probability: Phoenix Mercury 58%, Chicago Sky 42%
Phoenix still deserves favorite status at home because of its veteran leadership and offensive ceiling. The Mercury can score in bunches, especially when Thomas is controlling play from the fringes of the paint and Copper gets downhill in transition.
Still, the betting value appears to sit with the underdog. Chicago’s defensive effort through two games has been impressive, and the Sky have a clear advantage on the glass. Cardoso should create enough second-chance opportunities to keep the score within one or two possessions deep into the fourth quarter. I’ll take the 4.5 points with the Sky.
