West Ham welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to the London Stadium on September 1 with both clubs targeting an immediate return to the Premier League, but their starts to the Championship season have looked very different.
Wolves have taken 7 points from their opening three matches and sit near the top of the table, while West Ham are still searching for their first league victory after collecting just 2 points.
West Ham have home advantage and remain favored by both sportsbooks and prediction-market traders, but their price looks short considering what the two teams have produced so far. Wolves have been much more efficient going forward, making the double-chance market more attractive than taking them to win outright.
Wolves have scored 9 goals through their first three Championship matches. After opening with a 2-2 draw against Blackburn, they won 3-1 at Preston and followed that with a convincing 4-1 home victory over Stoke.
The goals have also been spread across the team. Rodrigo Gomes scored twice against Stoke, while Raúl Jiménez and Jordan James also found the net. Wolves fell behind after only two minutes in that match but responded quickly, taking the lead before halftime and controlling the second half.
West Ham's league results have been less convincing. They surrendered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw at Burnley, lost their first Championship home game 2-1 against Charlton and were then held to a 1-1 draw at Watford.
There are signs that those results undersell some of West Ham's play. They had 77.6% possession and 25 shots against Charlton, including nine on target, but defensive mistakes and poor finishing cost them. The issue was different at Watford. West Ham again controlled possession but created very little from it, finishing with only one shot on target.
That makes this an interesting tactical matchup. West Ham should have plenty of the ball at London Stadium, but possession alone has not been enough to consistently create high-quality chances. Wolves have looked more dangerous when games open up and could benefit if West Ham commit numbers forward looking for their first league win.
Neither side has much of a rest advantage after playing on Saturday. Wolves may also consider some rotation after a busy opening schedule.
Kieran Trippier, Yerson Mosquera, Rafiki Said and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde remain unavailable for Wolves. Santiago Bueno has returned to the squad. West Ham are without Tomáš Souček, while Pablo Felipe returned from injury to make the bench against Watford.
BetMGM makes West Ham the favorite at around +105, with the draw priced at +260 and Wolves at +230.
Prediction-market traders have reached a similar conclusion. On Polymarket, West Ham are trading at roughly a 47% implied probability to win, compared with around 28% for Wolves and 26%-27% for the draw.
At first glance, BetMGM appears slightly more bullish on both West Ham and Wolves. The difference is largely explained by sportsbook margin. The probabilities implied by +105, +260 and +230 add up to more than 100%. Once that margin is removed, BetMGM's view of the match is remarkably close to the probabilities being traded on Polymarket.
That agreement is useful. Two different types of markets see West Ham as the most likely winner, but neither makes the Hammers an overwhelming favorite.
Our projection is less positive about West Ham.
The opening three league games are still a small sample, but Wolves have scored 9 goals compared with West Ham's 4 and arrive unbeaten. West Ham's heavy possession numbers have also failed to translate consistently into goals.
Rather than taking Wolves at +230, the safer approach is to include the draw. BetMGM prices Wolves or Draw at around -137. The price is less attractive than the outright Wolves moneyline, but it protects against what our model considers the single most likely scoreline.
The total-goals market provides another interesting comparison. Polymarket traders currently put Over 2.5 goals at roughly a 58% probability. There is logic behind that price given that both teams have scored and conceded in each Championship match so far, but three league games is not enough to make that the preferred wager.
West Ham's home advantage and ability to dominate possession cannot be ignored, and their underlying performances have been somewhat better than a winless league record suggests. The betting market and Polymarket both make the Hammers the most likely individual winner for good reason.
Where our projection differs is in the size of that advantage. Wolves have looked more effective in both penalty areas and should have opportunities against a West Ham side that has already shown defensive vulnerability.
A 1-1 draw is the projected score, with Wolverhampton or Draw at -137 the preferred bet.
