Recent History Backs Milan
The market gives Milan barely a one-in-four chance at home in a derby they haven't lost in seven meetings. I make it closer to one in three, at 35%, giving a +8% edge at 27¢. You only need Milan to win in regulation, and with nearly $35,000 traded on Kalshi, that price isn't a thin-market quirk.
Market has overreacted to Bologna defeat
Milan lost 4-2 on Wednesday, but the xG was level at 1.95 to 1.99. Bologna scored four from chances worth about two goals. Before that, Amorim's side had gone eight league games unbeaten, and at San Siro they've averaged 2.56 xG per game while allowing just 1.16. Amorim admitted his team looked tired, which is a fair concern three days later, but the underlying level hasn't dropped.
Inter without Lautaro is a different attack
Inter's xG numbers are the best in the league, but Lautaro has been a big part of them, with 1.37 xG per 90 minutes. Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny are the alternatives alongside Marcus Thuram. Inter's 25 points are also nearly four ahead of their 21.23 expected points, and the 2-0 win at Venezia came from two late own goals. They've come from behind five times in their last eight league games, a run that is surely unsustainable.

“Inter have been the better side this season, and they lead their rivals in all measurable metrics. However, Inter's recent history in this matchup is terrible, and they have ridden their luck with late goals since losing Lautaro Martinez to injury, while Milan were unbeaten in the league until their midweek defeat to Bologna. While confidence is low, I still prefer the Milan side in a battle between two sides that have shown their fallability of late.”
Metric | AC Milan | Inter |
|---|---|---|
xG per game | 2.15 | 3.01 |
xGA per game | 1.33 | 1.27 |
Expected points | 16.69 | 21.23 |
Shots per game | 12.7 | 22.6 |
xG / xGA per game, last five | 2.43 / 1.25 | 2.82 / 1.25 |
xG / xGA per game, home / away | 2.56 / 1.16 at home | 3.10 / 1.47 away |
Player | Goals | Assists | xG | xA | Key passes per 90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Goncalo Ramos (MIL) | 2 | 1 | 5.26 | 0.67 | 0.56 |
Christian Pulisic (MIL) | 2 | 1 | 1.64 | 1.93 | 2.28 |
Alphadjo Cisse (MIL) | 4 | 0 | 1.60 | 0.45 | 0.82 |
Marcus Thuram (INT) | 5 | 2 | 5.70 | 1.74 | 1.65 |
Hakan Calhanoglu (INT) | 3 | 0 | 1.01 | 1.20 | 3.82 |
Federico Dimarco (INT) | 0 | 1 | 1.31 | 2.53 | 3.15 |
Inter's attacking numbers are huge. They average 3.01 xG per game and 22.6 shots in Serie A, nearly double Milan's 12.7, and they've produced 6.02 xG from corners alone. That's why they're favorites, and why I'm not suggesting Milan are the better side.
The gap narrows once you look at quality and venue. Milan's open-play chances are slightly better at 0.16 xG per shot against Inter's 0.14, and at home they create 2.56 xG per game. Defensively the two sides are almost identical over the last five league games, both allowing 1.25 xG per match. Away from home, Inter have conceded 1.47 xG per game, including 2.31 at Roma.
Thuram is the man Milan have to stop, with 5 goals from 5.70 xG and 5.29 shots per 90. Hakan Calhanoglu creates 3.82 key passes per 90 from deep, and Federico Dimarco has 2.53 xA. For Milan, Goncalo Ramos has scored just twice from 5.26 xG, so he's due, and Christian Pulisic has 1.93 xA.
Amorim's 3-4-2-1 relies on Luka Modric and Yunus Musah to control the middle, with Pulisic and Omari Hutchinson working between the lines behind Ramos. The wing-backs are key, and Milan's injuries out wide (Alexis Saelemaekers and Samuel Chukwueze) leave Amorim short of options there.
Cristian Chivu's 3-5-2 is built on Dimarco's crossing from the left and Nicolo Barella's runs from midfield. Without Lautaro, Inter lose the striker who links play best, and Esposito is more of a penalty-box forward. Thuram will look to run in behind Milan's back three.
The derby record suggests Milan know how to play this game. They won both league meetings 1-0 last season by staying compact, and Mike Maignan saved a Calhanoglu penalty in November's meeting.
The risk is set pieces. Inter have produced 6.02 xG from corners, and if Milan are tired after Wednesday, that's where it will show. Milan have also lost five home league games in 2026, a poor run for a side now backed at home.

AC Milan predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Maignan; De Winter, Pavlovic, Tomori; Terracciano, Musah, Modric, Bartesaghi; Hutchinson, Pulisic; Ramos
Inter Milan predicted XI (3-5-2): J. Martinez; Akanji, Bastoni, Augusto; Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Esposito
