Roma vs Real Madrid Prediction: Hosts Represent Value at Olimpico

Jose Mourinho returns to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, this time in the away dugout. Prediction markets are pricing his Real Madrid side as slight favorites at 51¢, and Madrid have won all four competitive meetings with Roma without conceding.
But this Roma side is unbeaten in seven and hasn’t lost at the Stadio Olimpico for almost a year. With Militao, Mendy and Asencio all out leaving Madrid down to the bare bones defensively, Real Madrid No represents the value side at 50¢.
Roma's defensive numbers are outstanding
Three goals conceded in six Serie A games represents an impressive start to the season for the Roma back line. They’ve kept clean sheets in all three Serie A away games, including Sunday’s 0-0 at Como, where they spent the last 40 minutes with 10 men after Donyell Malen’s red card. This is relevant as the home side are likely to spend longer without the ball against the Real Madrid midfield.
History favors Madrid, the price favors Roma
With Huijsen returning from injury and Militao and Asencio out, Mourinho must again turn to Rudiger and Konate at the back in Rome. While Los Blancos kept a clean sheet at the weekend with the same pairing, Konate has made an inauspicious start to his career in Spain, and has always been error-prone. Roma, and in particular Donyell Malen, are well-placed to take advantage of any slip up.
History favors Madrid, the price favors Roma
The head-to-head is the main reason the market leans Madrid’s way, but those four straight wins came in 2016 and 2018 against very different Roma teams. Taking Real Madrid “No” at 50¢ covers a Roma win or a draw. Sportsbooks have the same outcome at -111 on Roma +0.5, an implied 52.6%.

How Roma Can Prevent an Away Win

“I’m not expecting Roma to outplay Madrid for 90 minutes, and Mbappe can win any game on his own. But this Madrid team has lost at Betis and Atletico, has kept two clean sheets in its last eight games, and travels without three senior defenders. Roma haven’t lost at home game in almost a year and give up very little in open play. At 50¢ for Roma or the draw, I’m happy taking the home side with the half-goal start.”
Roma’s numbers under Gasperini stack up with anyone’s in Serie A. They scored 10 goals from 9.3 xG across their first three league games and created a league-high 17 big chances in that stretch. They have also conceded just 4 goals in all competitions so far this season, though 8.99 xGA would indicate some negative regression is due.
The Gasperini press drives Roma's attacking output. Roma had registered 58 high turnovers before the weekend, with 17 of those ending in a shot. They also boast 8.89 PPDA, indicating an effective high press.
Donyell Malen has made the most of his chances this season. His 6.41 xG is more than a goal clear of anyone else in Serie A, while Paulo Dybala has 4 assists from 4.29 xA, including all three in Malen’s opening-day hat-trick against Fiorentina.
Madrid remain prolific, scoring 18 goals in seven La Liga games. It’s everything around the attack that’s wobbly. They spent long spells without the ball against Inter on Champions League Matchday 1 and needed two glaring errors to win 2-1. Against Villarreal on Saturday they were jeered off at halftime before Yan Diomande’s 62nd-minute winner.
Over their last 10 away games in La Liga and the Champions League, they’ve averaged 1.4 goals scored and 1.5 conceded, and have won only 5 of their last 10 Champions League away games.
Gasperini will go 3-4-2-1 and play man for man across the pitch. Manu Kone and Marten de Roon have a huge job on Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva, and Roma’s center-backs will follow their runners deep into Madrid’s half. That’s how they’ve suffocated Serie A sides this season. It also leaves one-on-ones all over the back line, and against Mbappe and Vinicius that’s a risk Gasperini has to live with.
Mourinho won’t mind giving up territory. Madrid had 47% of the ball at home to Villarreal, and I’d expect less in Rome. Their route to goal is the transition: win it in midfield, get it wide early and let Mbappe attack the space Roma’s wing-backs leave behind. Wesley pushes high on the left, which could open the channel for Diomande and Denzel Dumfries on Madrid’s right.
Roma’s best weapon is the Dybala-Malen link. Dybala drifts into the half-spaces and Malen runs off the last defender’s shoulder. Without Militao, Madrid don’t have their quickest recovery defender. Carreras has been steady at left-back, but he’ll get tested by Matias Soule and Nahuel Molina on that side.
Goalkeeping is a potential swing factor. Pier Luigi Gollini kept a clean sheet at Como on his first Serie A appearance in two years, but he’s a step down from Mile Svilar, and Madrid’s front line will press his distribution.
Out: Mile Svilar (fractured toe), Jan Ziolkowski (foot)
Doubt: Bryan Cristante (knee)
Roma predicted XI (3-4-2-1):
Gollini; Mancini, Ndicka, Hermoso; Molina, Kone, De Roon, Wesley; Dybala, Soule; Malen
Out: Eder Militao (thigh), Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo, Raul Asencio
Real Madrid predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
Courtois; Dumfries, Konate, Rudiger, Carreras; Valverde, Bernardo; Diomande, Bellingham, Vinicius; Mbappe
