Fulham vs Chelsea Big Match Analysis: Can Alonso Pin Fulham Back at Craven Cottage?

Fulham and Chelsea begin their Premier League seasons at Craven Cottage tonight with remarkably similar starting points but very different expectations.
Both finished last season on 52 points, Chelsea edging Fulham on goal difference, and both arrive under new managers. Xabi Alonso has been backed heavily in the transfer market as Chelsea attempt to turn strong underlying numbers into a return to the Champions League places, while Álvaro Arbeloa inherits a Fulham side that has lost important attacking contributors.
That makes the table from last May slightly deceptive. Chelsea may only have finished one place above Fulham, but their attacking process was substantially stronger.
The central question tonight is therefore straightforward:
Can Fulham escape Chelsea's wingback pressure often enough to attack the spaces Alonso's system inevitably leaves behind?

Final 5 Preseason | W-D-L-W-D | W-D-W-L-L |
Expected Shape | 4-2-3-1 | 3-4-2-1 |
Chelsea's preseason finished particularly strongly. After defeats against Tottenham and Juventus, they beat AC Milan 3-0 and Real Sociedad 3-1, either side of a 3-3 draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim. Fulham's summer was less convincing, although a 1-0 win over Stuttgart in their final friendly gave Arbeloa a positive result immediately before the season opener.
The most important preseason development for Chelsea has not been their results. It has been Alonso establishing the positional framework that made his Bayer Leverkusen teams so difficult to contain.
Chelsea are expected to build in a 3-4-2-1, with two advanced wingbacks providing almost permanent width and two attacking midfielders operating behind João Pedro.
Antonee Robinson has traditionally provided a substantial proportion of Fulham's progression from left-back. If Chelsea's right wingback occupies him high and wide, Robinson faces a difficult choice: step forward and potentially leave Fulham's left channel exposed, or stay home and sacrifice one of the hosts' easiest routes up the pitch.
Alonso's preseason use of João Pedro adds another complication. Pedro has operated both as the striker and as one of the two players underneath him, rotating with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer rather than remaining fixed centrally. He scored twice against Real Sociedad and twice against AC Milan while occupying different roles.
That movement could be especially uncomfortable for a Fulham defense already missing Joachim Andersen.
The system is not without risk. When Chelsea push both wingbacks forward, their three centre-backs can be left defending a considerably wider area. Losing possession with the central midfielders ahead of the ball can also create an open corridor through which Fulham can counter.
Fulham are unlikely to want a prolonged possession contest. Their better route is to draw Chelsea forward, regain possession and immediately attack the channels outside the back three, which is likely Fulham's clearest path to creating high-quality chances. The problem is getting there often enough.
Chelsea's PPDA of 10.2 last season compared with Fulham's 13.8 already indicated a much more aggressive approach without the ball. Alonso's structure should intensify that territorial pressure rather than reduce it.
If Chelsea can consistently recover possession before Fulham find their first forward pass, the game could become heavily tilted towards the hosts' penalty area.
This may be the most important tactical battle on the pitch.
Robinson is most dangerous when he can receive possession facing forward and accelerate into space. Chelsea's wingback structure is specifically designed to prevent opposing fullbacks from receiving in those conditions.
If Robinson spends most of the first half defending close to his own penalty area, Fulham lose more than width. They lose one of their major progression mechanisms.
Conversely, every time he gets beyond Chelsea's first pressure creates precisely the type of transition Alonso's system can struggle to defend.
Fulham's task would be easier if João Pedro simply remained between their centre-backs, unfortunately for them that is highly unlikely.
His ability to withdraw into the No.10 space can force a centre-back to choose between following him and opening the defensive line, or allowing him to receive between midfield and defense.
That could create opportunities for Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer to attack the resulting space. With Andersen absent, the communication involved in passing those runners between defenders becomes even more important.
The decisive midfield statistic may not be possession percentage.
It could be how frequently Fulham complete their first pass after winning the ball.
Chelsea's 2025/26 underlying numbers show why. They generated 66.74 xG, compared with Fulham's 49.67, a difference of more than 17 expected goals despite both clubs finishing on exactly 52 points.
Chelsea also produced 166 shots on target to Fulham's 139.
The visitors' problem last season was not creating enough attacking situations. It was converting an underlying top-six attacking process into actual results.
This is where the comparison becomes difficult for Fulham.
Chelsea's 1.76 xG per 90 last season dwarfed Fulham's 1.31, while there was almost nothing between their defensive numbers:
Chelsea xGA/90: 1.38
Fulham xGA/90: 1.41
In other words, Fulham did not compensate for their weaker attack by producing a significantly stronger defensive process.
Chelsea finished with just six more goals despite creating roughly 17 additional expected goals. That underperformance is one reason the two sides ended the campaign level on points rather than separated by a much larger gap.
Other xG datasets produce slightly different absolute figures because providers use different models, but they tell the same broader story: Chelsea's expected-goal differential was substantially stronger than Fulham's last season.
There is another warning sign for Fulham.
Their attacking structure is being rebuilt without Harry Wilson and Raúl Jiménez, while Gonzalo García and César Palacios are being asked to replace a significant amount of established Premier League production. Chelsea, meanwhile, have added Morgan Rogers to an attack that already contained Palmer, João Pedro and Pedro Neto.
This is where tonight's market becomes interesting. The earlier ATS preview recommended Chelsea moneyline around -170, with the ATS model giving Chelsea approximately a 67% win probability.
That was already enough to produce an actionable edge. The market has since moved dramatically in the bettor's favor.
Chelsea have been moving between -112 and -121 this afternoon, with six books clustered within that narrow range. That is unusually strong line consensus and means the market is now asking Chelsea to win only around 53% to 55% of the time before accounting for vig.
Current Chelsea ML: -112 to -121
Best observed price: -112
Implied probability at -112: 52.8%
ATS model probability: ~67%
Raw model edge: ~14 percentage points
Sportsbook consensus: Strong
Likely closing range: -120 to -130
ATS verdict: BET
Chelsea do have absences, particularly defensively, and Enzo Fernández's uncertain status reduces midfield certainty and helps explain the market's shift in sentiment away from the Blues. That justifies shortening the model advantage rather than blindly taking the original 67% as gospel.
Even if we haircut Chelsea all the way to 58%, however, fair odds would still be approximately -138. At -112, that would represent an edge of roughly 5.2 percentage points, comfortably above the ATS 3% betting threshold.
