Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Prediction: Tactics, Lineups & Market Value

Manchester United head to the Metropolitano on Tuesday for their first Champions League away game in two years. Atletico are favorites across sportsbooks and prediction markets, and we see little value in the moneyline. However, there is plenty of value is in the totals market.
The ATS model is projecting 2.6 goals in this contest, and Atletico’s big games under Diego Simeone tend to stay tight. Meanwhile United have flattered to deceive going forward this season, and enter this contest without a fit recognised centre forward.
Our model sees a +10% edge on backing Under 3.5 goals at 58¢.
The Under is the value play
Under 3.5 goals is available at 58¢, which implies a 58% chance this game finishes with three goals or fewer. We think that number is closer to 68%. Five of Atletico’s last six games stayed under the line, and United have scored more than twice only 3 times this season, against Sabah, a depleted Brighton in the League Cup, and Ipswich. The totals market on Polymarket has also seen very little money at time of writing, so the price could shorten. If you like this price, it’s best to get in early.
United take plenty of shots, but few good ones
United lead the Premier League in shots and have the most touches in the opposition box (205). But Opta has their 0.08 xG per non-penalty shot as the third-worst in the division, so most of those attempts come from poor positions. They’ve also scored no set-piece goals despite winning the second-most corners (40). With Benjamin Sesko out, there’s no penalty-box striker to turn that volume into goals, which strengthens the case for the under.
Simeone’s biggest games stay tight
Five of Atletico’s last six games finished with three goals or fewer. In last month’s derby, Atletico had 0.19 xG before the break and there was one shot on target in the whole first half. At Anfield they produced 0.81 xG in a 2-1 defeat. Against strong opponents, Simeone’s side slows the game down, which suits an under position.

Why I'm Backing the Under

“The totals line is priced for goals at both ends, but recent data from both sides would suggest this overestimates both attacks. Atletico’s big games are physical and slow, and United have a striker problem and the worst shot quality of any top side in England. I think this ends 2-1 Atletico or 1-1. When you combine stout defence from Atleti with United's profligacy in front of goal, you have a great recipe for Under 3.5 goals.”
United’s underlying numbers have been better than their results, but that doesn't mean they're due positive regression. They have registered 10.7 xG and conceded 8.4 xGA through six Premier League games, the sixth-best xG difference in the league. They average 58.2% possession and 11.2 interceptions per game, the third-most. But they’ve scored nine and conceded nine, and they’re winless in four in all competitions.
Shot quality is the issue. Bryan Mbeumo (2.87 xG) and Bruno Fernandes (3.05 xG) produce most of United’s threat. Matheus Cunha creates chances (1.76 xA) more than he finishes them (0.56 xG). Without Sesko, United have no player whose job is to get on the end of crosses.
Atletico have been strong at home. They’ve beaten Malaga, Osasuna and Real Madrid at the Metropolitano, scoring eight and conceding one. The derby was their most complete game of the season: 2.38 xG to Real’s 0.32, although Real played with 10 men from early in the second half.
Atletico do concede in Europe, though. Before their trip to Anfield they’d kept one clean sheet in 16 Champions League games, and Liverpool scored twice. So I expect United to score, but one goal for United doesn’t threaten an Under 3.5 position.
Simeone has used a 4-3-3 with a target forward since January, shifting to a back three when Atletico have the ball. In big games, he lets the opponent have the ball and waits. That suits a home tie against a side that averages 58% possession.
United will have plenty of the ball. Carrick’s side builds patiently through Tielemans and Mainoo, works it wide to Mbeumo and Dalot, and ends up crossing into a box with no striker in it. Atletico will happily defend that all night with Cristian Romero and David Hancko in the middle.
Atletico’s threat comes from wide areas and late in games. Giuliano Simeone and Alex Baena will look to run at United’s full-backs, and Alejandro Grimaldo gives them a threat from set pieces. Atletico’s three goals against Real Sociedad all came from the 84th minute onward, and United have conceded late in two of their last three games. If Atletico win, I expect it to be late and by one goal, which is another result that fits the under.
The hosts boast a clea bill of health ahead of Tuesday's game, with Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sorloth returning from injury.
Atletico predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
Oblak; Llorente, Romero, Hancko, Grimaldo; Koke, Cardoso; Giuliano Simeone, Lee Kang-in, Baena; Alvarez
Out: Benjamin Sesko (shin), Patrick Dorgu (hamstring), Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte
Doubts: Noussair Mazraoui (knock).
Manchester United predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha
Atletico’s home form and United’s four-game winless run are already priced into the result market, so I’m not taking the moneyline.
The total is a different story. The game would need four goals for this position to lose, and I can’t see where they come from. United have no striker, and Simeone has spent the season turning big games into a grind.
At 58¢, Under 3.5 is the best value on the board.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Manchester United
