Aston Villa welcome Fenerbahce to Villa Park on Wednesday, October 14, looking to build on their 3-2 Champions League victory over Club Brugge. Unai Emery's side have struggled domestically, but their European performances have been considerably more encouraging. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, arrive in Birmingham unbeaten in five matches and fresh from two emphatic Turkish Super Lig victories.
There are a couple of interesting storylines heading into this one. Villa have been scoring goals regularly but can't seem to keep opponents quiet, while Fenerbahce have rediscovered their attacking form and tightened things up defensively. Something will probably have to give on Wednesday night.
The prediction markets make Aston Villa favorites, with the home side trading around 58–60¢ on Kalshi and Polymarket. I agree with that assessment, although I'm not particularly enthusiastic about taking Villa outright.
Instead, I'm leaning toward both teams to score, a contract currently available around 58–60¢. Considering Villa's defensive performances and Fenerbahce's attacking options, that feels like a more interesting way to approach the matchup.
Both Kalshi and Polymarket make Aston Villa favorites, although neither platform considers a home victory particularly certain.
There isn't a particularly large difference between the platforms. Both agree that Villa are favorites, but a Fenerbahce victory or draw is far from impossible.
I'm inclined to agree.
Villa have the advantage of playing at home, and Emery has a strong record in European competition. However, their Premier League performances haven't been convincing, and there are legitimate questions about their defensive consistency.
The goal markets are more interesting. Over 2.5 goals is trading around 60–61¢, while both teams to score is available at a similar price.
I prefer the latter because I don't necessarily expect one team to dominate the other. A 1-1 draw would qualify, as would our projected 2-1 Villa victory or a 2-2 draw.
The current price doesn't scream value, but it's the market that most closely reflects my expectations for Wednesday's matchup.
Aston Villa's 2026–27 season has been difficult to figure out.
The Villans sit 15th in the Premier League with just five points, having struggled to maintain consistency following a summer of significant squad changes. However, their recent attacking performances suggest that Emery is gradually finding solutions.
Their latest result was a 2-2 home draw against Brentford on October 10. Nicolas Jackson and John McGinn both found the net, but Villa twice allowed Brentford back into the contest and ultimately had to settle for a point.
That has become a familiar problem.
Villa have now gone six consecutive competitive matches without a clean sheet, with both teams scoring in all six. Those same six fixtures have also produced at least three goals.
It's a remarkable pattern, particularly for a team managed by Emery, who is usually excellent at organizing his sides defensively.
However, Villa's Champions League opener against Club Brugge demonstrated that there is plenty of attacking quality in this squad.
The English side secured a 3-2 away victory in Belgium, with McGinn, Emiliano Buendia and Jackson all scoring during the opening 45 minutes. Villa created approximately 3.22 expected goals and registered 21 shots, including nine on target.
Those are impressive attacking numbers against Champions League opposition.
Defensively, however, the performance was considerably less convincing. Club Brugge created opportunities of their own, registering seven shots on target and scoring twice.
There is also the matter of Villa's recent home performances. They have yet to win at Villa Park in the Premier League this season, although their European home record is considerably stronger, with ten consecutive victories in continental competition.
I'm expecting Villa to be competitive on Wednesday, but I'd be hesitant to predict a comfortable victory given how frequently they've been conceding goals.
Fenerbahce arrive in England with considerably more confidence than they had a few weeks ago.
Ismail Kartal's side have won three consecutive matches and are unbeaten in five across all competitions. Their latest two Turkish Super Lig victories have produced an impressive 11 goals without conceding.
The first was an extraordinary 8-0 victory over Eyupspor, with Vedat Muriqi scoring four goals and Mason Greenwood adding another two. Fenerbahce followed that performance with a 3-0 away victory against Rizespor on October 10.
Those results have moved the Turkish giants into fourth place domestically, with 19 league goals already scored this season.
Of course, there's a significant difference between facing Eyupspor and visiting a Premier League opponent in the Champions League. We shouldn't automatically assume that Fenerbahce will maintain anything close to their recent scoring rate.
Still, the quality in their attacking lineup is difficult to ignore.
Muriqi has scored seven goals in eight matches this season, while Greenwood has contributed six. Kerem Akturkoglu and Marco Asensio provide additional creativity, giving Fenerbahce several ways to create opportunities.
Their Champions League opener was also encouraging.
Fenerbahce held Roma to a 1-1 draw in Istanbul, producing approximately 1.57 expected goals and creating three big chances. The Italians were arguably the stronger team on paper, but Fenerbahce demonstrated that they could compete against high-quality European opposition.
However, there is one statistic that makes me slightly cautious about the both-teams-to-score contract.
Fenerbahce have kept four consecutive clean sheets, which is quite an achievement considering how aggressively they have been playing recently.
The question is whether that defensive improvement can survive a trip to Villa Park, where Emery's team will be desperate to produce a convincing European performance.
Both managers have selection decisions to make, with Villa particularly affected by injuries on the left side of their defense.
Aston Villa predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Pau Torres, Wan-Bissaka; Kamara, Joao Gomes; McGinn, Manzambi, Buendia; Jackson.
Fenerbahce predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
Ederson; Semedo, Skriniar, Ake, Brown; Guendouzi, Kante; Greenwood, Asensio, Akturkoglu; Muriqi.
These are predicted lineups rather than confirmed starting XIs. Fenerbahce could use a more midfield-heavy formation, while Villa's main uncertainty concerns their defense.
Aston Villa's biggest selection problem is at left-back.
Matteo Ruggeri suffered a hamstring injury against Brentford and is expected to miss several weeks, while Ian Maatsen remains unavailable with an ankle injury. That leaves Emery without a natural first-choice left-back for Wednesday's encounter.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka could fill the position, although asking a right-footed defender to operate on the opposite side against Fenerbahce's attacking players isn't an ideal solution.
Amadou Onana remains sidelined with a knee injury, while George Hemmings is also unavailable. Leon Goretzka has recovered sufficiently to be included in the matchday squad, although he is unlikely to start after his lengthy absence.
Fenerbahce have fewer immediate injury concerns.
Mert Muldur is unavailable, while Jayden Oosterwolde is also sidelined. Otherwise, Kartal should have most of his preferred attacking players available.
That could be particularly important given Villa's defensive problems. Fenerbahce have enough attacking quality to test the hosts, especially if they can isolate Villa's makeshift left-back.
I think Aston Villa will have the advantage in terms of home support and familiarity with European football under Emery, but I don't expect them to dominate this match from beginning to end.
Villa have been particularly effective when attacking quickly rather than relying entirely on possession.
Against Club Brugge, they scored three goals despite having just 36% of the ball. Their attacking movement, particularly through Jackson and McGinn, created opportunities whenever they managed to move into dangerous positions.
Fenerbahce are capable of playing in a similar fashion.
Kartal has built a team with considerable midfield experience, particularly through N'Golo Kante and Matteo Guendouzi. They can defend relatively deep before moving the ball forward quickly, while Greenwood and Akturkoglu provide attacking options out wide.
Muriqi also gives Fenerbahce a physical presence inside the penalty area.
That could become important against a Villa defense missing several players. If the visitors can deliver quality crosses or exploit space behind Villa's full-backs, I think they'll create some decent scoring opportunities.
At the other end, Jackson's movement should cause problems for Fenerbahce's central defenders. The striker has scored three goals in his last five appearances, and his ability to attack space could be valuable against a Turkish side that sometimes commits players forward.
Ultimately, I expect both teams to have opportunities. Villa should create more chances overall, but I don't trust their defense enough to confidently predict another clean sheet.
