PredictIt beginner guide

PredictIt is a political prediction market where you trade Yes or No shares on real-world political outcomes. You are not betting against a sportsbook. You are trading against other users, with prices moving as polls drop, campaigns shift, court rulings land, and political news breaks.

This guide explains how PredictIt works, how to read prices, what fees apply, what to check before buying shares, and why the contract rules matter more than the market headline. Winning shares settle at $1. Losing shares settle at $0.

For a broader platform breakdown, including pros, cons, fees, and available markets, see our full PredictIt review.

PredictIt beginner snapshot

What is PredictIt? A political prediction market where users trade Yes or No shares on real-world outcomes.
Best for People who follow elections, polling, campaigns, government appointments, and political news closely.
Not ideal for Casual bettors who want sportsbook-style odds, simple bet slips, or markets that require little research.
Key cost PredictIt charges a 10% fee on profits from winning trades and a 5% processing fee on withdrawals.

What is PredictIt?

PredictIt markets are built around specific yes-or-no questions: Will this candidate win the primary? Will this nominee be confirmed? Will this policy pass before a certain date? You buy Yes shares if you think the answer is yes, or No shares if you think it is no.

Prices trade between $0.01 and $0.99 and are often treated as rough implied probabilities. A Yes share at $0.40 suggests the market is pricing that outcome around 40%. But that shortcut has limits. Fees, liquidity, trader behavior, and market restrictions can all distort prices in ways that pure probability math does not capture.

PredictIt is focused mostly on politics: presidential elections, Senate and House races, party nominations, cabinet confirmations, court-related questions, government appointments, and international political events. That focus makes it most useful for people who already follow campaigns, polling, and political news closely. It is not built like a traditional sportsbook, and it should not be treated like one.

If you are new to the wider category, our guide to how prediction markets work explains the basic event-contract model in more detail.

Quick takeaway: PredictIt is simple on the surface, but it is not just about picking the right political outcome. You also need to understand the price, contract rules, liquidity, fees, and settlement conditions.

How PredictIt works

Every trade on PredictIt is a contract. You are not placing a fixed-odds bet with the house. You are buying a share from another trader at the price available in the market. If the outcome happens, winning shares settle at $1. If the outcome does not happen, losing shares settle at $0.

You also do not have to wait for the market to resolve. If the price moves in your favor, you can sell before the outcome is decided. That gives PredictIt a trading element that normal sports betting does not have. Your three basic exits are to hold until settlement, sell for a profit, or sell to reduce a loss.

Simple PredictIt example

You buy 100 Yes shares at $0.35. Your cost is $35. If the market resolves Yes, those shares settle at $1 each, or $100 total. That creates a gross profit of $65 before fees. If the market resolves No, the shares are worth $0.

The important word is gross, because PredictIt fees can meaningfully change the actual return.

How to get started on PredictIt

The mechanics of using PredictIt are simple, but beginners should move slowly. The goal is not just to pick the right political outcome. The goal is to understand the market, the contract rules, the fees, and the exit options before risking money.

1

Create and verify your account

Sign up with your basic information and complete identity verification early, before you need to withdraw. Most real-money platforms require verification before processing payouts, and waiting until you want to cash out can create an unnecessary delay.

2

Deposit only what you are comfortable losing

There is no charge to open an account or deposit funds. But before you put money in, decide on a figure you would be fine losing entirely. Knowing politics is not the same as having a trading edge, and even strong opinions can be wrong.

3

Find a market you actually understand

Browse open markets and focus on ones where you can explain the question, the settlement trigger, the likely resolution timeline, and what might move the price. If you cannot explain all four, that market probably is not ready for you yet.

4

Read the contract rules before buying anything

This is the step most beginners skip, and it causes the most expensive mistakes. The market title can be misleading. The contract rules define exactly what counts as a winning outcome, including the official source used for settlement, the relevant deadline, and how edge cases are handled.

5

Size the position, then buy

Once you have read the rules, decided which side you are on, and factored in fees, place the trade with a position size that leaves room to be wrong. A poll, court ruling, endorsement, withdrawal, debate, fundraising report, or news cycle can move the market against you.

What to check before trading on PredictIt

Before buying shares, slow down and check the market like an editor, not a fan. A good political opinion is not enough. You need to know whether the contract, price, liquidity, and fee-adjusted return all make sense.

Contract wording Does the headline match the actual settlement rules?
Resolution source What official source determines the result?
Deadline Does the outcome need to happen by a specific date or time?
Liquidity Can you realistically enter and exit near the displayed price?
Fees Does the trade still make sense after the 10% profit fee and withdrawal fee?
Position size Are you risking an amount that still leaves room to be wrong?

That checklist matters because the market price alone does not tell the full story. A share can look cheap and still be overpriced. A favorite can look safe and still carry poor upside. The edge comes from the gap between your research and the price available after fees and liquidity are considered.

How PredictIt fees work

PredictIt does not charge to open an account or deposit funds. The costs come in two main places: a 10% fee on profits from winning trades and a 5% processing fee on withdrawals. That means the difference between your entry price and $1 is not your true return.

Open account No fee
Deposit funds No deposit fee
Winning profit 10%
Withdrawal 5%

PredictIt fee example

You buy 100 Yes shares at $0.50, so your cost is $50. If those shares settle at $1, the position returns $100. Your gross profit is $50. PredictIt then charges 10% on that profit, or $5, leaving $95 before withdrawal.

If you withdraw the full amount, the 5% withdrawal processing fee reduces the cash-out amount again. Beginners often overestimate profitability by looking only at the raw price difference. Always calculate the net return, not the gross return.

How to read PredictIt prices

Market prices shift in response to polls, candidate announcements, court rulings, debate performances, fundraising numbers, legislative updates, and breaking news. A share at $0.70 does not mean the outcome is guaranteed. It means buyers and sellers are currently meeting around that price.

The better question is not simply, “What is this share trading at?” The better question is, “Is this price too high, too low, or accurate given what I know?” That gap between your assessment and the market price is where any edge lives. Blindly following the market price is not a strategy.

Also watch liquidity. Thinly traded markets can leave you unable to exit at the price you want, especially if your plan is to sell before settlement rather than hold to resolution.

Liquidity matters because the displayed market price is only useful if you can actually enter and exit near that price. We cover this in more detail in our PredictIt liquidity guide.

Is PredictIt legal?

PredictIt is not a sportsbook. It has historically operated under CFTC no-action relief tied to a political prediction market research structure. In July 2025, the CFTC amended Letter No. 14-130, the no-action position connected to PredictIt, allowing for a transfer of market operations to the Prediction Market Research Consortium and removing the previous 5,000-trader limit in individual contracts.

That supports PredictIt’s continued operation, but users should still understand the difference between platform legitimacy and trading risk. A platform can be established and still be risky for the user. You can lose money by overtrading, misreading a contract, ignoring fees, entering thin markets, or concentrating too much of your bankroll on one political outcome.

Important distinction: Legal structure does not remove trading risk. PredictIt should be approached as a real-money political trading platform with specific contract rules, not as a casual betting app.

PredictIt vs. Kalshi vs. Polymarket

Politics first

PredictIt

Best for: U.S. political markets.

Main strength: Simple Yes or No political contracts with a long history in election markets.

Main drawback: Narrower market focus, profit fees, withdrawal fees, and varying liquidity.

Broader events

Kalshi

Best for: Broader U.S. event contracts.

Main strength: Regulated U.S. exchange with more categories beyond politics.

Main drawback: Can feel more exchange-like for beginners who only want simple political markets.

Crypto-native

Polymarket

Best for: Global events and crypto-native users.

Main strength: Deep liquidity in certain markets and broad event coverage.

Main drawback: Different access, structure, and regulatory considerations compared with U.S.-based platforms.

If your interest is specifically U.S. elections and political outcomes, PredictIt is the natural starting point. If you want broader event coverage, compare Kalshi’s market selection before committing to one platform. If you are more comfortable with crypto-based markets and global event coverage, Polymarket may be part of the comparison, but the structure is very different from PredictIt.

For a deeper platform-by-platform comparison, read our guides to PredictIt vs Kalshi and PredictIt vs Polymarket.

Common beginner mistakes

Most early losses on PredictIt come from the same handful of errors: buying based on the market headline without reading the contract rules, calculating profit from the raw price difference without accounting for fees, treating a cheap share price as automatic value, forgetting that you can sell before settlement, or putting too much money behind one political opinion.

The underlying pattern is the same in each case: moving too fast. Reading slowly is free. Losing capital is not. Before you trade, make sure you understand what has to happen, when it has to happen, how the result is determined, and whether the fee-adjusted upside is still worth the risk.

Beginner rule: If you cannot explain the market rules, the settlement source, the deadline, the liquidity, and the fee-adjusted upside in plain English, do not buy the shares yet.

Final verdict

PredictIt is easy to understand on the surface and genuinely engaging for anyone who follows politics closely. The Yes or No share model is intuitive, prices are transparent, and the ability to exit before settlement gives users more flexibility than a standard fixed-odds bet.

Best for Politics-focused users who follow polls, campaigns, government appointments, elections, and political news closely.
Not ideal for Casual bettors, users who do not want to read contract rules, or anyone expecting sportsbook-style simplicity.
Key strength Simple political markets with transparent Yes or No pricing and the option to sell before settlement.
Key weakness Fees compress margins, liquidity varies, and contract rules require careful reading.

The bottom line: PredictIt can be useful and interesting if you understand politics and approach markets with discipline. Start with markets you know well, trade small until you understand how the platform behaves, calculate fees before buying, and treat every position as a probability decision rather than a political endorsement.

If you are still comparing your options, our guide to the best prediction markets breaks down the leading platforms by market coverage, fees, regulation, liquidity, and beginner usability.

PredictIt FAQ

Is PredictIt legal in the U.S.?

PredictIt has historically operated under CFTC no-action relief tied to a political prediction market research structure. In July 2025, the CFTC amended the relevant no-action position connected to PredictIt. Users should still understand that prediction market rules can evolve and should check current platform terms before trading.

How does PredictIt make money?

PredictIt charges a 10% fee on profits from winning trades and a 5% processing fee on withdrawals. There is no PredictIt fee to open an account or deposit funds.

Can you sell PredictIt shares before the market ends?

Yes. PredictIt users can sell shares before settlement if another trader is willing to buy at the available market price. This allows users to lock in a profit, reduce a loss, or exit before the final outcome is known.

Is PredictIt good for beginners?

PredictIt can be beginner-friendly for users who closely follow politics, but it is not risk-free. Beginners should start small, read contract rules carefully, understand the settlement source, and calculate fees before trading.

Are PredictIt prices the same as probabilities?

Not exactly. PredictIt prices are often used as rough implied probabilities, but fees, liquidity, market limits, trader behavior, and news-driven sentiment can all distort the price.
