Thursday’s matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Carolina Hurricanes is an Eastern Conference contest that pits the two division leaders in the East against each other. This contest has the potential to be an Eastern Conference Final preview and both teams will be looking to make a statement against one another with an eye on the postseason. Here, I break down this matchup and make my Lightning vs Hurricanes prediction on the ice.
Pick: Hurricanes ML ATS PRO
Confidence: 3 out of 5
The Hurricanes have been one of the steadier teams in the Eastern Conference this season, sitting at the top of the Metropolitan Division with a strong record thanks to a ton of success at home. The Canes won three straight games prior to the Olympic break and will try to extend that streak here.
Tampa Bay has also been consistent, winning six games in a row going into this contest. However, Tampa Bay will have to contend with the challenge of playing on consecutive nights after beating the Maple Leafs in their return to the ice on Wednesday night.
Goaltending remains a key determinant in games like this. Andrei Vasilevskiy has continued to be a backbone for the Lightning, posting a solid save percentage and anchoring Tampa Bay defensively. The Hurricanes have relied on their rotation to keep pucks out of the net, and Brandon Bussi has posted strong numbers when called upon. Bussi is expected to get the start in this contest for Carolina as well.
Offensively, Tampa Bay boasts one of the best offensive talents in the league. Nikita Kucherov has been a standout this season, leading the Lightning in points and consistently creating scoring chances. Meanwhile, Carolina’s Seth Jarvis leads his team in goals and has been a reliable producer on the Hurricanes’ top lines. Sebastian Aho also offers a scoring touch and playmaking ability, but he is just coming back from representing Finland in the Olympics and could sit out.
Score Projection: Tampa Bay Lightning 3 – Carolina Hurricanes 4 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Tampa Bay Lightning 44%, Carolina Hurricanes 56% ATS PRO
The rest advantage for the Hurricanes should be what sets them apart in this matchup as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to take Carolina to win this game as a moneyline favorite at home against a Lightning team that just got back from the Olympic break and now has to play on a back-to-back.
