The Detroit Red Wings and the Carolina Hurricanes will square off on Saturday in a compelling NHL matchup that doubles as an important late‑season contest in the Eastern Conference. Both clubs are in strong positions within the East, but they enter this contest with very different recent patterns and underlying numbers. Detroit arrives off a gritty overtime victory behind a big performance from Dylan Larkin, while Carolina continues to impress at home and has taken points consistently across close games. Here, I make my Red Wings vs Hurricanes prediction below.
Pick: Hurricanes to win ATS PRO
Confidence: 4 out of 5
Carolina enters this game riding strong recent form, having won 4 of its last 5 matchups and averaging near 3.5 goals per game in that stretch. The Hurricanes have also proven capable in close contests, going 14‑2‑3 in games decided by one goal this season, which reflects a knack for grinding out results when the margin is slim. Detroit, meanwhile, has been more up and down, going 5‑3‑2 over its last 10 games, and relying on tight defensive outings and clutch scoring in overtime to earn points rather than consistent dominance.
Goaltending appears balanced on paper, but Carolina’s defensive numbers have the edge. Detroit’s John Gibson has been steady, highlighted in the recent 2‑1 win over Ottawa, where he made 26 saves. But his team’s modest scoring average leaves little margin for error. Carolina’s netminders have been part of a system that allows fewer shots on goal per game and benefits from a deeper defensive group in front of them, making them a safer choice to weather Detroit’s pressure.
The top forward units for both teams will be influential. Detroit’s Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat are producers, with Raymond tallying over 60 points and DeBrincat scoring 30 goals this season, but Carolina counters with a balanced attack featuring Seth Jarvis’ 26 goals and Andrei Svechnikov’s high involvement in playmaking. Carolina’s depth scoring and ability to generate chances consistently gives them an edge as long as they remain disciplined in the offensive zone.
Score Projection: Hurricanes 4 – Red Wings 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Hurricanes 61%, Red Wings 39% ATS PRO
This contest should go the way of Carolina, with the Hurricanes’ recent offensive rhythm and depth giving them the upper hand. Detroit’s reliance on close games and overtime results suggests they can hang around, but Carolina should control play for extended stretches and capitalize on chances. I'm going to take the Canes on home ice in this Saturday night matchup in the NHL.
