Colorado and Detroit renew their storied rivalry on the ice on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Colorado has been one of the league’s best teams all winter, powered by an elite top line and a deep group of skaters. Detroit has surged into playoff contention in the Atlantic Division, leaning on a top six that can score in waves and a power play that punishes mistakes from their opponents. I've taken a closer look at this matchup and you can find my Avalanche vs Red Wings prediction below.

Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings

Key Storylines
- Recent form
- Colorado enters at the top of the Western Conference with an offense averaging around 3.9 goals per game and shot volume near 35 per game. The Avs have lost two games in a row and four of their last five games going into this matchup.
- Detroit has struggled recently as well, losing three of their last four games. The Red Wings are in second place in the Atlantic Division, trailing the Tampa Bay Lightning by two points going into Saturday's play.
- Goaltending
- Colorado’s expected starter should be Mackenzie Blackwood for this game. Blackwood has a 2.44 GAA going into this matchup. The Avs don't have a bad option in goal right now, as Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood both having GAAs under 2.50 for the season so far.
- Detroit’s likely starter is John Gibson for this game. He comes into this matchup with a save rate of .905. He has delivered timely saves but he will have his hands full against an Avs team with one of the best offenses in hockey.
- Key skaters
- Nathan MacKinnon is tracking for another 100-plus point campaign with 38 goals and 50 assists entering the weekend. His line is so dangerous in the offensive zone and the Wings will have to commit bodies to him at all times.
- Detroit’s attack leans on Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. DeBrincat leads the Red Wings with 30 goals, while Raymond’s playmaking and two-way work set up looks for Dylan Larkin and Patrick Kane.
Betting Trends & H2H
- This is the first meeting of the 2025-26 season between the Avalanche and Red Wings.

- Detroit is 28-27 in the puckline market heading into Saturday afternoon.

Final Thoughts
Both of these teams are better than they have played in recent games. But only one of them can get a win in this matchup from Michigan. I'm going to take the Avs to win this matchup on the moneyline, as their explosive offense should help them get the job done in what will be a tight game between two teams with their sights set on playoff hockey in the near future.
