The Battle of Alberta will take place on Wednesday night as the Calgary Flames visit the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton enters as a clear favorite at home after making it to the Stanley Cup Final once again. They will try to avoid another slow start to a season by beating their provincial rivals here. Before the puck drops from Rogers Place, continue reading to get my Flames vs Oilers prediction for Wednesday's game.
Odds | Line |
|---|---|
Moneyline | Oilers –225 / Flames +190 |
Puckline | Oilers –1.5 (+110) / Flames +1.5 (–130) |
Total | 6.5 |
Edmonton comes into this season with high expectations after another deep postseason run last year. Calgary just missed the playoffs last year, but Flames head coach Ryan Huska inked a two-year extension recently after a strong year overall. The Oilers have won seven of the last 10 head-to-head matchups with the Flames and will try to start their season off with a win over Calgary here.
Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard are back in goal for the Oilers. Skinner will likely start the season in net here, but the Oilers have a pretty evenly talented pair of goaltenders heading into the year. Calgary’s goaltender was Dustin Wolf in the majority of their games last year. He is back again this season and will try to improve on a solid .910 save percentage from a season ago.
Edmonton remains anchored by Connor McDavid, who recently signed a two-year extension. His continued presence will make Edmonton dangerous on the attack again this year. Leon Draisaitl has a history of strong performances versus Calgary and could exploit any defensive lapses from the Flames as well. Calgary was led in points and goals last season by Nazem Kadri, who is back again at age 35 for the Flames.
Player | Prop |
|---|---|
Connor McDavid | Over 1.5 points |
Leon Draisaitl | Over 1.5 points |
Nazem Kadri | Over 0.5 points |
Score Projection: Edmonton 4 – Calgary 2
Win Probability: Edmonton 62%, Calgary 38%
The key to this game will be whether the defense of the Flames can do enough to make life difficult for the Oilers' high-octane offense. Edmonton will lean heavily on McDavid and Draisaitl to produce their goals, but there is more to the Oilers' attack than those two. My expectation for this game is for the Oilers to come out strong after losing in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row. I'll lay the puckline with the Oilers in the first Battle of Alberta of the season.
