Browns vs Jets Prediction and Preview: Will Cleveland's Surprising Start Continue?

Cleveland arrives at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, October 11, with the stronger record but not necessarily the stronger matchup. The Browns are 3-1 after three straight victories, while the 1-3 Jets have dropped three consecutive games. New York’s 23-12 defeat in Chicago was ugly, yet Geno Smith’s efficiency and significant injuries in Cleveland’s defensive front give the home team a reasonable route to a rebound in East Rutherford.
Markets Questioning Cleveland
Polymarket prices the Jets at 56¢ and the Browns at 44¢ to win outright. That puts New York in the favorite’s role despite Cleveland’s three-game winning streak. The market also has New York covering 2.5 points at around 51¢, with the total set near 40.5 points. Those numbers indicate expectations for a close, relatively modest-scoring contest rather than a comfortable Jets victory.
Price vs. Projection
My matchup-based projection gives New York a 60% chance of winning, creating a 4% edge over the listed 56% price. The difference comes primarily from Smith’s ability to handle pressure, Cleveland’s depleted defensive interior, and the Jets playing at home. Missing Breece Hall makes this far from an automatic selection, so the position loses its appeal if New York rises beyond 58¢.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Cleveland’s winning streak is drawing attention away from its close finishes and the loss of multiple interior defenders. The Jets’ passing efficiency and home-field advantage carry more weight in this matchup than their recent record.”
The Browns enter Week 5 tied for the AFC North lead after beating Pittsburgh 27-24 on October 1. Their victories over Tampa Bay, Carolina, and Pittsburgh came by a combined 10 points, evidence of their ability to finish tight contests but also a reminder that their record leaves little margin for error.
The Jets, meanwhile, have followed a season-opening 23-10 win over Tennessee with losses to Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago. A fourth straight defeat would leave them playing catch-up before the season reaches its midpoint, even if NFL prediction markets have the Jets as favorites entering this game.
Smith has completed 72.6% of his passes through four games, the league’s highest rate, and has thrown for 902 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Against pressure, he has completed 64.7% of his throws while averaging 9.8 yards per attempt. Garrett Wilson remains his favorite target, with 270 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Cleveland can generate disruption through its blitz packages, but defensive tackle Mason Graham, who has four sacks, is ruled out. Mike Hall Jr. and Kalia Davis will also miss Sunday. That makes it harder to collapse the pocket without committing extra defenders, which could give Smith time to find Wilson on intermediate routes.
Deshaun Watson has supplied steadier production than many expected, completing 69.6% of his passes for 855 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Rookie Denzel Boston has 284 receiving yards, and his developing connection with Watson has helped stretch defenses. The Jets have limited opponents to 193.3 passing yards per game, but their run defense has been less convincing.
Chicago ran for 232 yards against New York last week, with Kyle Monangai contributing 146. That gives Cleveland running back Quinshon Judkins a clear opening. If the Browns consistently move the chains on the ground, the Jets could struggle to create enough possessions for their passing advantage to matter.
New York has problems of its own. Hall, receiver Adonai Mitchell, and offensive lineman Dylan Parham are out, putting additional responsibility on Braelon Allen and a thinner receiving group. Edge defender Will McDonald is questionable, another concern for a defense that needs quicker stops after allowing Chicago 492 total yards.
The difference may come on third down and in the red zone. The Jets managed just 157 total yards and seven first downs against Chicago. They cannot repeat that performance and expect to win. Still, Cleveland’s injuries up front should make New York more effective between the tackles and provide Smith cleaner throwing opportunities. Expect a competitive game decided late, with the Jets doing just enough to end their losing streak.
