The Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets will meet in the first game of their opening round series in the NBA Playoffs on Saturday. Minnesota enters as the sixth seed after a solid 49-33 season, while Denver surged late to secure the third seed at 54-28, closing the regular season on a 12-game winning streak. Game 1 at Ball Arena is headlined by the star power of Anthony Edwards and Nikola Jokic, but it could come down to the play of the supporting casts. Here, I break down this matchup and make my Timberwolves vs Nuggets Game 1 prediction.
Denver enters this series as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 12 straight games to close the regular season. During that stretch, the Nuggets consistently topped 120 points while showcasing elite ball movement and shooting efficiency. Their offense ranks among the best in the NBA, averaging 122.1 points per game.
Minnesota, on the other hand, dealt with inconsistency down the stretch, going 9-10 over its last 19 games. The Timberwolves rested several starters in the regular-season finale, but key contributors such as Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert are expected to be back on the floor for the opening game of their postseason.
Another important angle to note is how the regular-season series between these teams went. Denver won three of four meetings. Their offensive success against Minnesota’s defense is a major factor in this matchup.
Denver Nuggets
Minnesota Timberwolves
Category | Timberwolves | Nuggets |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 118.0 | 122.1 |
Team Field Goal % | 48% | 50% |
Rebounds per game | 44.1 | 44.0 |
Assists per game | 26.1 | 29.0 |
Denver’s combination of home-court advantage, elite efficiency, and recent form makes it the clear favorite entering Game 1. The Nuggets have demonstrated the ability to overwhelm Minnesota’s defense during the regular season, and their offensive rhythm has only improved during their winning streak. Jokic’s playmaking creates consistent high-percentage looks, and Denver’s supporting cast has stepped up in recent games.
Given the current form, matchup history, and statistical edge, Denver covering the spread is the most logical play to me. Expect the Nuggets to set the tone early in the series with a convincing win at home.
