The Eastern Conference’s top seed rolls into the home of the reigning Western Conference kings on Monday, as the Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder square off. Detroit has handled adversity with remarkable composure since losing Cade Cunningham to a collapsed lung on March 19, winning four of their last five games and protecting their cushion atop the East. Here, they take on a Thunder team playing on the second game of a back-to-back. Before tip-off from OKC, you can find my Pistons vs Thunder prediction below.

Key Storylines
The biggest story surrounding this game is the ongoing absence of Cade Cunningham. The two-time All-Star was diagnosed with a collapsed lung on March 19 and has missed six straight games entering Monday. He is officially ruled out, and while the Pistons organization has expressed optimism about him returning before the playoffs open on April 18, he won’t be suiting up tonight.
To make matters more complicated, Isaiah Stewart remains sidelined with a left calf strain, and both Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson were listed as questionable heading into the weekend as the Pistons played a back-to-back against Minnesota on Saturday before flying to Oklahoma City for Monday’s game. Detroit may well be playing with a depleted roster against the best team in the Western Conference.
On the other side, Oklahoma City has been an absolute buzzsaw. The Thunder enter at 59-16, the best record in the West, and have gone 9-1 over their last 10 games. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to put up one of the more dominant individual seasons the league has seen in years, cementing his status as the frontrunner for a second straight MVP award. Meanwhile, Chet Holmgren has taken his game to another level, earning his first All-Star selection and anchoring one of the league’s most suffocating defensive units. The Thunder beat the New York Knicks last night and will try to get a second win in as many nights over an Eastern Conference contender.
Key Players
Oklahoma City Thunder
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is operating on a level that few players in the modern era have reached. He is averaging 31.4 points, 6.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game this season. He shoots over 66% true shooting and is the central force behind everything Oklahoma City does offensively.
Chet Holmgren has taken a significant step forward this season. The second-year big man is averaging a career-high 17.1 points on 55.2% from the field, including 35.3% from three, along with 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in 29.2 minutes per contest. His rim protection and floor spacing make him one of the most versatile big men in the Western Conference.
Jalen Williams has been a steady contributor as the Thunder’s third option. He is averaging 17.2 points, 5.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game in 28.5 minutes. His ability to create off the bounce, facilitate in the mid-range, and guard multiple positions makes him a nightmare matchup for a thin Detroit wing rotation.
Detroit Pistons
Jalen Duren has been sensational since Cunningham’s injury. Over his last six games, the All-Star center has averaged 21.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks on 70.3% shooting. On the season, Duren is averaging 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and ranks among the league leaders in both offensive rebounds and total boards. He is the Pistons’ best weapon and their only true star presence in Cunningham’s absence.
Daniss Jenkins has stepped into the starting point guard role and delivered beyond reasonable expectations. In nine games without Cunningham, Jenkins has averaged 14.9 points, 7.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds. He scored 30 points in Detroit’s most recent win and has shown impressive composure for a player who started the year on a two-way contract before being converted to a standard deal in February.

Pistons vs Thunder Model Projection
- Score Projection: Detroit Pistons 114 – Oklahoma City Thunder 122
- Win Probability: Detroit 14%, Oklahoma City 86%
OKC should be able to win this game outright at home. But I’m going to take the points with the Pistons. While Detroit is short-handed going into this contest, they do have a rest advantage that should help them to compete. I would urge bettors to keep an eye on the injury report before this contest, but the Pistons should keep this game inside of 12 points on Monday night.
