McLaren is one of the most historic teams in Formula 1 and remains one of the sport’s most recognizable constructors. Founded by Bruce McLaren in the 1960s, the team has won multiple drivers’ and constructors’ championships across several eras.
Based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, the team rebuilt its competitiveness under the last set of regulations, resulting in back-to-back Constructors Championships in the last two seasons.
McLaren enters the 2026 season with one of the strongest young driver pairings in Formula 1. Both reigning World Champion Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have shown consistent qualifying speed and race pace, giving the team strong scoring potential across the calendar.
Car Development Philosophy
McLaren has recently focused on aerodynamic efficiency and balanced car performance across a wide range of circuits. The team’s cars tend to perform well in medium speed corners and often show strong race pace during longer stints.
Development upgrades throughout the season have also become an important part of McLaren’s strategy as the team has reasserted itself among the leading constructors.
Driver Lineup Analysis
Lando Norris has developed into a consistent front running driver with strong qualifying performances and smooth race pace. His ability to manage tire wear often helps McLaren maintain competitive race speed. His experience of becoming World Champion under significant pressure from a rampant Max Verstappen will surely serve him well in 2026.
Oscar Piastri has quickly adapted to Formula 1 after success in junior categories. His calm driving style and adaptability have already produced strong results during his early seasons with the team, though he will be looking to replicate his form from the first half of the 2025 season rather than the second half in 2026.
Team Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Strong aerodynamic balance
- Competitive driver pairing
- Consistent race pace
Weaknesses
- Occasional difficulty matching the fastest teams in straight line speed
- Less time with the new engine as a customer to Mercedes leaves them a step behind.
2026 Outlook
Mixed. Lando Norris has repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction with the new regulations, and McLaren seem to have taken a step back in terms of performance this season. In Australia, they were the 3rd or 4th fastest car behind Mercedes and Ferrari, with Norris finishing 5th in Melbourne. However, it is worth noting that McLaren did not start on top in the last regulatory era, and they have shown that they can out-develop their competitors as the season progresses.
Betting Angles
At this stage of the season, it would seem that qualifying and Top Six markets are the most reliable for McLaren this year. Both drivers were in the fight for 3rd in qualifying in Melbourne, and the race pace of their 2026 car is at least competitive with that of the Red Bull. Look for McLaren to inch their way up the grid as they get to grips with the deployment of the new Mercedes engine.
