George Russell starts the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position, with Polymarket pricing the Mercedes driver at 65% to win Saturday's race. However, with Russell costing 66¢ and championship leader Kimi Antonelli available at just 12¢, the more interesting speculative angle is another remarkable comeback from the Italian.
Antonelli qualified 16th after crashing at Turn 1, but he has already demonstrated that starting at the back is not necessarily a barrier to victory. Just three weeks ago, he won the Italian Grand Prix from 19th, overtaking Russell in the closing laps. Mercedes have won 10 of the season's first 14 Grands Prix, making outright car performance a central part of the Antonelli argument. The question is whether Baku offers him enough opportunities to overcome 15 cars and challenge his teammate again.

Russell's 66¢ Price Leaves Little Room for Error
Russell was 0.837 seconds quicker than Leclerc in qualifying, reinforcing Mercedes' advantage over the rest of the field. His 65% market probability is consistent with the dominant position he has established ahead of Saturday's race. However, that demands a high degree of confidence in a race featuring a long main straight, narrow barriers and several potential strategic complications.
Antonelli Has Already Delivered a P19-to-P1 Recovery
Antonelli won at Monza from 19th earlier this month, using Mercedes' superior pace and a well-timed Virtual Safety Car. Starting 16th in Baku presents another recovery opportunity, with the long main straight offering plenty of overtaking potential. At 12¢, he is the speculative alternative to Russell.
Leclerc Is the Immediate Threat to Mercedes
Leclerc starts alongside Russell but costs just 7¢ on Polymarket. Ferrari's qualifying pace was considerably slower than Mercedes', yet track position gives Leclerc an opportunity to challenge into Turn 1. His race pace and ability to stay ahead of Piastri will determine whether he can threaten Russell.

Mercedes' performance throughout the weekend has been the clearest indicator of its advantage. Russell topped FP1 and FP2, with Antonelli recovering from hydraulic problems to finish second in the latter session.
The championship leader was 0.552 seconds behind Russell in FP2 but ahead of Verstappen and both Ferraris. Those results, combined with Russell's qualifying margin, suggest Mercedes have the outright performance required for Antonelli to move through the field.
The difficulty will be managing traffic. Baku's long straights create overtaking opportunities, but its narrow middle sector leaves little margin for error. Antonelli cannot afford to lose too much time behind slower cars during the opening stint, or make a mistake like he did in qualifying.
A conventional one-stop strategy is expected in Baku, with Pirelli supplying the C3, C4 and C5 compounds. Relatively low tyre degradation could make track position particularly important, leaving drivers further back dependent on overtaking and strategic opportunities.
For Antonelli, an early Safety Car could help limit the time lost to Russell, while a well-timed neutralisation during the pit-stop window could create an opportunity to gain several positions.
However, the same interruptions could also help Russell defend his lead. Antonelli needs to combine a fast recovery with favorable circumstances rather than relying on a Safety Car alone, reinforcing the fact that this is a speculative trade rather than a high probability one.
