Phillies vs Nationals Prediction & Preview: Can Sánchez Get Back on Track?

Updated September 15, 2026
The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals open a two-game series on Tuesday, September 15, with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. ET at Nationals Park. Cristopher Sánchez (17-5, 2.79 ERA) gets the start for Philadelphia, while rookie Jackson Kent (1-4, 6.59 ERA) takes the mound for Washington.
The Phillies currently hold the second NL Wild Card spot and are still fighting for playoff positioning. Sánchez will look to get back on track after a rough start to September, while the eliminated Nationals have a chance to play spoiler against a division rival.
In this Phillies vs Nationals prediction, we’ll break down the biggest storylines for tonight’s matchup and explain why we like the Philadelphia team total over 4.5 runs.
ATS Expert Verdict:
“I like the Philadelphia team total over 4.5 runs tonight. The Phillies are averaging 5.12 runs per game in September, third-most in baseball, and their bats came alive late against Atlanta on Sunday with seven runs in the eighth inning. I think that momentum carries over into a favorable matchup against struggling rookie Jackson Kent.”
Polymarket Pricing
Philadelphia over 4.5 runs is currently trading at 54¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives it a 59% chance of hitting. That gives us a 5% edge at the current price, and our model projects the Phillies to score six runs tonight.
Jackson Kent Has Struggled
Kent has had a rough start to his rookie season, posting a 6.59 ERA and 1.83 WHIP through six starts. He’s allowed at least three earned runs in five of them and is coming off another tough outing against San Diego, where he gave up five runs on eight hits in just three innings.
Philadelphia Has Been Hitting Lefties Well
Philadelphia has been hitting left-handed pitching really well lately, batting .285 against lefties over the last 30 days, third-best in MLB. The Phillies also have a .768 OPS in those matchups, which ranks eighth, so I like their chances of doing some damage against another lefty in Kent tonight.

Cristopher Sánchez has been excellent in his sixth season with the Phillies, posting a 2.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 7.6 WAR across 187.1 innings. He also has a 5.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and currently has the third-best odds to win the NL Cy Young at 3¢ on Polymarket, although Jacob Misiorowski has all but locked up the award.
Sánchez has struggled so far in September, though. He has a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through two starts and is coming off his third-worst outing of the year by Game Score. He allowed six runs on 10 hits and two home runs over six innings against Houston.
Washington won't necessarily be an easy matchup, either. The Nationals rank fourth in MLB with a 112 wRC+ against lefties, while Sánchez has a 3.68 ERA and 1.23 HR/9 on the road this year, compared to a 2.21 ERA and 0.47 HR/9 at home.
On the other side, Jackson Kent has an even tougher challenge against a Phillies offense that has been red-hot in September. Philadelphia leads MLB this month with a .809 OPS and .268 batting average while ranking in the top three with 5.12 runs per game, 42 home runs, and 406 total bases.
Washington has thrown its 23-year-old rookie into the fire down the stretch, and the results have been rough. The Nationals have lost five of Kent’s six starts, his average Game Score is just 41.8, and he has a 9.00 ERA and 2.13 WHIP through two starts in September.
The good news for Kent is that he’s been much better at Nationals Park. He has a 3.27 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in two home starts, compared to an 8.82 ERA and 2.14 WHIP in four starts on the road. Still, this will be one of his toughest tests yet with how well Philadelphia has been swinging the bat.
Washington was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday when the Padres beat the Giants 6-4, despite the Nationals finishing off a three-game sweep of the Angels themselves. They enter Tuesday at 70-81 with 11 games left.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia enters at 83-67 and currently holds the second NL Wild Card spot, just half a game behind the Cubs for the top spot and 4.5 games behind the Braves in the NL East. Every win matters as the Phillies battle for playoff positioning down the stretch.
Still, Washington has a chance to play spoiler in this two-game series against a division rival. The Nationals also have several younger players getting more opportunities late in the season, giving them something to play for even with the playoffs out of reach.
Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies 6, Washington Nationals 3
Best Trade: Philadelphia TT Over 4.5 (Playable up to 58¢)
I actually expect the Nationals to put up a bit of a fight in this one, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sánchez struggle again. His innings are starting to pile up as the Phillies look ahead to the postseason, and Washington has been one of the better teams in baseball against left-handed pitching this year.
That said, I trust the Phillies’ bats more than anything else in this game. Philadelphia has been one of the hottest offenses in baseball this month, and I like its chances of getting to Kent early and adding more against a Nationals bullpen that has struggled all season.
So, my top Phillies vs Nationals prediction is Philadelphia TT over 4.5 runs, which is currently trading at 54¢ on Polymarket.
