The Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers open a three-game series on Tuesday, September 15, with first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field. Patrick Sandoval (1-5, 4.58 ERA) gets the start for Boston, while Cody Bradford (0-5, 4.72 ERA) takes the mound for Texas.
Both teams enter the series playing well. Boston is coming off a series win over Kansas City, while Texas took its series against Arizona and is now just one game behind Houston in the AL West. With both teams still fighting for playoff positioning, these next three games could be important.
In this Red Sox vs Rangers prediction, we’ll take a closer look at Tuesday’s matchup and explain why we like Texas +1.5 runs in the series opener.
ATS Expert Verdict:

“I’ll take +1.5 with the Rangers tonight. Texas has been one of the best teams in baseball against left-handed pitching, so I like its chances of getting to a struggling Patrick Sandoval. The extra run also matters here, as Boston has 18 one-run wins this season and Texas has 16 one-run losses. Even if the Rangers don’t win outright, I like their chances of keeping this one close.”
Polymarket Pricing
Texas +1.5 is currently trading at 62¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives the Rangers a 70% chance of covering. That gives us an 8% edge at the current price, and our model projects a close 4-3 win for Boston.
The Rangers Hit Lefties Well
Texas has been one of baseball’s best offenses against left-handed pitching this season, ranking second with a 116 wRC+ and fourth with a .766 OPS. That sets up well against Sandoval, who has struggled so far in September with a 6.30 ERA and 2.00 WHIP through two starts.
Boston's Offense Has Cooled Off
The Red Sox have been in a bit of a funk offensively, averaging just 3.33 runs per game over their last nine. Boston is also getting close to locking up the No. 2 Wild Card spot, so there may not be quite as much urgency on its side as there is for a Rangers team sitting just one game back in the AL West.

This isn’t exactly a pitching matchup for the ages. Patrick Sandoval enters at 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.76 WHIP, and Boston has lost five of his last six starts.
That includes a 6-1 loss to the Angels his last time out, when Sandoval allowed four runs on 10 hits and two walks over six innings. That’s especially concerning considering Los Angeles ranks second-to-last in the MLB with just 4.07 runs per game this season.
Cody Bradford hasn’t fared much better. He’s 0-5 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.57 WHIP, and Texas has lost six straight games with him on the mound. His numbers have gotten even worse in September, with a 9.00 ERA and 1.75 WHIP through two starts.
With neither starter giving me much confidence, I’d rather take the team priced as an underdog and get the extra 1.5 runs to work with.
We could also be looking at a high-scoring game tonight, with over 7.5 total runs currently priced at 56¢ on Kalshi. That makes sense with two struggling lefties facing two of the better offenses in baseball against left-handed pitching.
Texas has a 116 wRC+ against lefties, while Boston sits at 108, with 100 representing league average. The Rangers also rank fourth in the MLB with a .766 OPS against lefties, followed closely by the Red Sox in fifth at .750.
Josh Jung is a great example, batting .354 with a .936 OPS against lefties, compared to .281 with a .764 OPS against righties. Wilyer Abreu has shown a similar split for Boston, hitting .309 with a .904 OPS against lefties compared to .235 with a .760 OPS against righties.
If those splits hold up tonight, both Sandoval and Bradford could have a tough time keeping runs off the board.
The Rangers are also getting some important players back at the right time. Third baseman Josh Jung returned on Saturday after missing nearly two months with a calf strain, while starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi returned the same day after being out since early August with elbow inflammation. Reliever Robert Garcia is back from the IL as well.
Those returns are especially important with Texas right in the middle of the playoff race. The Rangers enter Tuesday at 74-76, just one game behind the 75-75 Astros in the AL West and 1.5 games back of the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot.
With only 12 games left, every game matters for Texas. Getting healthier gives the Rangers a much better chance to make one final push for a playoff spot.
Prediction: Boston Red Sox 4, Texas Rangers 3
Best Trade: Rangers +1.5 (Playable up to 69¢)
I think both offenses have a chance to put up some runs in this one, and I wouldn’t be surprised if either team comes out on top. Still, my favorite play is Texas +1.5, currently trading at 62¢ on Polymarket. The Rangers are 40-32 at Globe Life Field this season, and I like their chances of keeping pace with a Boston offense that hasn’t been at its best lately.
I just don’t see enough separation between these teams to expect Boston to pull away. Getting that extra run gives us some protection in a matchup that could easily come down to the final few innings.
