Red Sox vs Yankees Preview: Friday Night AL East Showdown

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees kick off a huge four-game series Friday night at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET. The two AL East rivals are both fighting for playoff position, and with a doubleheader coming Saturday, there’s plenty at stake this weekend in the Bronx.
AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler (11-6, 2.16 ERA, 0.96 WHIP) gets the ball for the Yankees, while left-hander Patrick Sandoval (1-2, 4.54 ERA, 1.76 WHIP) takes the mound for Boston. Can the Yankees’ young star slow down a Red Sox team that’s been red-hot lately, or will Boston keep rolling against its biggest rival?
Let’s preview Friday night’s matchup, make our Red Sox vs Yankees prediction, and break down some of the biggest storylines heading into the series opener.
I’m going to keep it pretty simple in this one. Give me the team with the better starting pitcher. I like the Yankees to open the series with a win Friday night, behind a strong performance from their breakout star, Cam Schlittler.
New York is currently priced at around 60¢ to win on Polymarket, though you may also want to consider the Yankees -1.5 runs at 41¢ for a little more value. Boston has been good in close games this year, especially lately, but when the Red Sox do lose, it usually hasn’t been all that close. Five of their last six losses have come by two or more runs.
Yes, it’s tough to go against Boston right now. If you remember, the Red Sox swept the Yankees in four games the last time these teams met in late June, which helped kickstart this impressive run they’ve been on over the last two months.
But I think the Yankees can get to Patrick Sandoval. His numbers haven’t been all that impressive, and while Boston is 6-2 in his eight starts this season, he’s benefited quite a bit from the Red Sox offense turning things around in the second half.
This also lines up with our ATS.io Quantitative Model, which gives the Yankees a 69% chance to win and projects a 4-3 final score. Check out our full Red Sox vs Yankees prediction for more data and analysis on Friday night’s matchup.
If you’re considering backing the Yankees Friday night, you’ve got to be a little worried about the heater Boston has been on lately. Believe it or not, the Red Sox woke up on June 25 with a 32-46 record, the worst mark in the American League. They were even behind teams like the Angels and Athletics.
Boston had already fired manager Alex Cora after a rough 10-17 start to the season, and by late June, the Red Sox looked like a team that would be selling at the trade deadline. Instead, they’ve completely turned their season around.
Since June 25, Boston owns an MLB-best 41-14 record, climbing all the way to the third-best record in the American League. It all started with a four-game sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park in late June, and the Red Sox haven’t really slowed down since. They even tied the franchise record with a 15-game winning streak on July 22.
A big part of the turnaround has been an offense that finally came alive, led by veteran Willson Contreras, who enters Friday hitting .281 with a .916 OPS. The pitching has been pretty good, too. Boston owns a 3.47 team ERA, third-best in baseball behind only the Yankees and Brewers.
If there’s anyone you want facing a red-hot Red Sox team right now, Cam Schlittler is definitely on the short list. The 25-year-old has been nothing short of spectacular in his second MLB season, posting a 2.16 ERA (3rd among qualified pitchers), 0.96 WHIP (4th), and 193 strikeouts (6th) through 158 innings.
That performance has made Schlittler the favorite to win the AL Cy Young as we head down the stretch. Polymarket currently gives him around a 63% chance to take home the award, with Yes shares trading around 64¢. At this point, Toronto’s Dylan Cease looks like his only real competition.
There is one concern worth keeping an eye on, though: Schlittler’s workload. He’s already thrown 158 innings this season after pitching just 73 innings in the majors as a rookie in 2025. The Yankees have also lost four of his last five starts, although that’s largely been due to a lack of run support rather than poor pitching from Schlittler.
Still, Friday night should be a pretty good test for the young Yankees ace against one of the hottest teams in baseball.
Take a quick look at the AL East standings and you’ll see just how much is at stake this weekend. Unfortunately for Boston and New York, the three best records in the American League all belong to teams in their own division. Tampa Bay leads the way at 79-54, followed by the Yankees at 75-58, four games back, and the Red Sox at 73-60, six games back.
Obviously, both teams would love nothing more than to catch the Rays, win the AL East, and potentially grab the No. 1 seed in the American League. That would mean a first-round bye and home-field advantage through the AL side of the playoffs.
But even if Tampa Bay holds onto the division, there’s still plenty to play for between these two rivals. The Yankees and Red Sox have a pretty comfortable grip on the top two Wild Card spots, sitting 7.5 and 5.5 games ahead of Cleveland, respectively.
That means we could be heading toward a rematch of last year’s AL Wild Card Series, when the Yankees took two of three from Boston. And if these teams do meet again, finishing ahead of the other could make a big difference. Remember, the higher-seeded team gets to host all three games of the Wild Card Series, just as New York did when it knocked Boston out last October.
There’s still a month of baseball left, but with four head-to-head games this weekend, both teams have a chance to put themselves in a much better position heading into September.
