Virginia Tech brings the better statistical foundation. In the most recent full season data available, the Hokies posted 78.8 points per game, shot 45.2% from the field, 35.5% from three, and 74.3% at the line, while allowing 74.9 points per game. Their adjusted efficiency numbers also point to a solid ACC-level team with a stronger defensive ceiling than Mercer. Mercer’s most recent full season numbers were more explosive offensively: 82.7 points per game, 46.3% shooting, 34.9% from three, and 72.3% at the line, with 75.5 points allowed per game. The Bears also opened the new season with a 90-point outing, which supports the idea that their offense can keep them live as an underdog. The concern is that Virginia Tech’s defense and overall efficiency profile are still better, so Mercer needs a cleaner shooting night and a lower-turnover game to pull the upset.
Virginia Tech should be the more efficient team and is the likelier winner, but Mercer has enough offensive ability to make the moneyline underdog worth a small look at the current market view. The Hokies project to win by a comfortable margin in the most likely game script, with a final around 79-63, yet Mercer’s path to an upset is live enough to create a modest edge on the Bears to win outright.
