The UMass Minutemen are still searching for their first win of the season at 0–10 They head on the road to take on the Ohio Bobcats (6–4) on Tuesday night in Athens. UMass has struggled mightily on both offense and defense, while Ohio has shown balance and is still in the mix in the race to make the MAC championship game. Before kickoff from Ohio, continue reading to find my UMass vs Ohio prediction below.
Pick: Ohio Bobcats –33.5
Confidence: 3/5
UMass has endured a brutal season offensively, averaging only 246.3 yards per game. That average is among the lowest in FBS football this season. Their scoring output sits at just 10.5 points per game. The UMass defense has given up 440.9 yards per contest and 37.6 points on average. Ohio is averaging 410.3 yards on offense, with a balanced attack between their running and passing games.
A huge storyling going into this matchup is the race for the MAC title game. Ohio is tied for the second-best record in the conference at 4-2 in MAC play. There are five teams with that same conference record entering the final two weeks of the regular season. Ohio can do itself a huge favor by winning out and putting pressure on the other teams in the race for the top two in this conference.
Ohio’s offense is led by Parker Navarro, who combines his passing with his ability to run to be a dangerous weapon for the Bobcats. Even when the passing game is limited, his mobility keeps defenses honest. On the UMass side, quarterback AJ Hairston has completed just under half of his passes, completing 49.8% of his throws. He has 957 passing yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.
It is hard to envision a scenario where UMass stays competitive with Ohio in this contest. The Bobcats are at home, playing better on both sides of the ball, and have way more to play for going into this contest. I will lay the points with Ohio here, as they should move to 5-2 in the MAC with a win over arguably the worst team in FBS football.
