Pitt Had No Reason to Open Things Up
Pitt’s 12-7 win over UCF looks concerning for the Over at first, but the game script tells a different story. UCF didn’t score its first points until 2:51 remained in the fourth quarter, so Kade Bell had little reason to let Mason Heintschel air it out or take unnecessary chances with a lead.
Syracuse Left Points on the Field Last Week
Syracuse’s 21-18 loss was misleading, too. The Orange outgained Cal 436-249, but three interceptions, missed field goals, and costly penalties kept that production from turning into more points. If Pitt gets ahead Thursday, Steve Angeli may also need to throw more to keep Syracuse in the game.

Last Saturday’s loss to Cal was a tough one for Syracuse. The Orange jumped out to a 12-0 lead and later went back ahead 18-14, but Steve Angeli threw a 53-yard pick-six with less than five minutes left that ended up being the difference in a 21-18 loss.
Angeli finished 24-of-49 for 306 yards and a touchdown, but also threw a career-high three interceptions. It was easily his worst game since arriving at Syracuse, which raises the question of how he’ll respond on Thursday night.
The good news is that we’ve already seen Angeli play at a high level for the Orange. Before suffering a torn Achilles last season, he threw for 1,317 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just two interceptions while helping Syracuse get off to a 3-1 start.
The biggest challenge for Angeli and the Syracuse offense will be a Pitt defense that has allowed just 21 points through two games, while holding its opponents scoreless in six of eight quarters.
The Panthers have been especially dominant against the run, ranking third in the country at just 23.5 rushing yards allowed per game. UCF managed only 20 yards on the ground last week, so Syracuse may have a hard time establishing much of a rushing attack.
That could force the Orange to lean heavily on Angeli and the passing game. More throws mean more chances for big plays, clock-stopping incompletions, and even turnovers that create short fields, all of which could help our Over 51.5 prediction.
History is definitely not on Syracuse’s side in this one. Pitt has dominated the rivalry going back to their Big East days, holding a 20-4 advantage over the last 24 meetings, including a 9-2 record under Pat Narduzzi.
Many of those games haven’t been particularly close, either. The Panthers have won by double digits in five of the last seven meetings and have outscored Syracuse 71-26 over the last two years.
To make matters worse for the Orange, they haven’t beaten Pitt on the road since 2001. Syracuse has had a hard enough time with the Panthers anywhere, but winning in Pittsburgh has been an even bigger challenge.
I actually expect a closer game than the market suggests and wouldn’t be shocked if Syracuse pulls off the upset under third-year head coach Fran Brown. The Orange added 19 transfers this offseason, with several of those additions aimed at improving a defense that struggled last year, and rivalry games like this can get weird.
That said, Over 51.5 total points is still my top prediction. Last week’s low-scoring results don’t tell the whole story, and the game script sets up well if Pitt gets ahead. Syracuse may have to lean on Angeli and throw more, which creates opportunities for points on both sides, especially against an aggressive Panthers defense.
If you can find 50.5 or 51, even better, but I’m comfortable with 51.5. Our model projects a 34-28 Pitt win, which would put the game comfortably above the current total.
