Miami vs Stanford Preview: Are the No. 7 Hurricanes on Upset Alert?

The No. 7 Miami Hurricanes open their 2026 season Friday night with a trip across the country to Stanford Stadium, where kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. PT (9:00 p.m. ET).
For Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes, it’ll be their first time back on the field since last season’s heartbreaking loss to Indiana in the National Championship. Stanford, meanwhile, already has a game under its belt, entering at 1-0 after beating Hawaii in Week 0 in Tavita Pritchard’s debut as head coach.
Miami enters as a heavy favorite, but Stanford will have a chance to pull off the kind of upset that would shock the ACC and the rest of college football. Can the Cardinal make things interesting at home, or will Miami pick up right where it left off last season? Let’s make a prediction for Friday night and preview some of the biggest storylines to watch.
Miami enters Friday night with roughly a 96% chance to win according to Polymarket, with the Hurricanes currently trading at 96¢. The more interesting market for me is the margin, where Miami is favored by 23.5 points and a Hurricanes win by 24 or more is trading at around 55¢.
I’m taking Miami to win by 24+ points at 53¢ on Polymarket. Stanford did beat Hawaii last week, but it wasn’t exactly convincing. The Cardinal nearly blew a 23-7 fourth-quarter lead, allowing Micah Alejado and the Rainbow Warriors to score 20 points in the final quarter before Stanford eventually escaped with a 37-27 win.
Yes, Mario Cristobal has earned a bit of a reputation for losing games Miami probably shouldn’t, but I think the Hurricanes come out focused in Week 1. They’re coming off a trip to the National Championship and have their sights set on another playoff run, so I expect them to come out looking to make a statement and set the tone for the season.
Stanford’s defense also showed plenty of weaknesses against Hawaii, especially in that fourth quarter. And things aren’t getting any easier this week. Now they have to deal with Heisman hopeful and Duke transfer Darian Mensah, along with a Miami offense that has plenty of weapons around him. That includes RB Mark Fletcher Jr., WR Malachi Toney, and Mensah’s former Duke teammate WR Cooper Barkate.
I think that’s ultimately too much for Stanford to handle. Look for Mensah and the Hurricanes to put up plenty of points and pull away for a comfortable win on Friday night.

One advantage Stanford may have over No. 7 Miami is that it already had a chance to shake off some of the rust in Week 0. The Cardinal opened the season with a 37-27 win at home over Hawaii, getting some revenge after losing to the Rainbow Warriors in Honolulu last season.
And for most of the game, Stanford was clearly the better team. The Cardinal outgained Hawaii 468-325, including a 158-46 advantage on the ground, while averaging 6.5 yards per play compared to just 4.3 for the Rainbow Warriors.
Michigan transfer QB Davis Warren also looked good in his Stanford debut, throwing for 310 yards and a touchdown. He was especially impressive late. After Hawaii erased a 23-7 deficit and took a 27-23 lead with just 4:06 remaining, Warren led Stanford on a seven-play, 62-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead. The Cardinal defense then added a scoop-and-score to make the final margin 10 points.
Still, it wasn’t exactly a perfect performance. Giving up 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter is obviously a concern, and Stanford also committed eight penalties for 59 yards. They were able to overcome those mistakes against Hawaii, but there won’t be nearly as much room for error against Miami on Friday night.
If you’re a little nervous about Miami laying this big of a number on the road in ACC play, I can’t blame you with Mario Cristobal on the sidelines. The Hurricanes are just 9-7 in ACC road games since Cristobal took over in 2022, and he’s had his fair share of head-scratching losses as a favorite along the way.
We saw it last season when Miami went to SMU as a sizable favorite and lost 26-20 in overtime. In 2024, the Hurricanes blew a 21-point lead in a 42-38 loss at Syracuse that ended their College Football Playoff hopes. And who could forget the decision not to kneel against Georgia Tech in 2023, which somehow turned into a 23-20 loss at home?
So if you don’t feel great about trusting Cristobal and Miami as a 23.5-point road favorite here, I completely understand. There’s definitely enough history to make you think twice.
That said, I actually think some of those past blunders could help Miami in this spot. Cristobal and the Hurricanes know better than anyone what can happen when you overlook an opponent you’re supposed to beat. Coming off a trip to the National Championship, I expect Miami to show up in Palo Alto focused and ready to take care of business.
The most exciting part of this matchup has to be the Miami debut of Darian Mensah. According to current pricing on Kalshi, the new Hurricanes QB has the third-best chance to win the Heisman Trophy in 2026 at around 9%, trailing only Notre Dame’s CJ Carr and Texas’ Arch Manning.
And it’s not hard to see why there’s so much hype. Mensah is coming off an enormous season at Duke, finishing second in the country with 3,973 passing yards to go along with 34 touchdown passes and just six interceptions. He also posted a 153.6 passer rating and 78.0 QBR while leading the Blue Devils to their first ACC championship since 1989.
Now he gets to step into an even better situation at Miami. The Hurricanes should give Mensah a deeper and more talented offensive line, along with plenty of weapons and explosive playmakers around him.
It’ll be interesting to see just how quickly everything comes together, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Mensah puts up even bigger numbers with the Hurricanes. And against a Stanford defense that had some issues last week, he should have a pretty good opportunity to start his Miami career with a big performance on Friday night.
