Illinois will host Northwestern in a Big Ten college basketball matchup on Wednesday night. The Illini got an impressive road win at Nebraska in their last outing and they will try to get another important win in this game. To do that, they will have to avoid letting the emotions of this rivalry game get the best of them. Below, I've got you covered with my Northwestern vs Illinois prediction in college hoops.

Key Storylines
- Form and ratings: Illinois is 19-3 with an 11-1 home record and an offense posting 84.6 points per game while allowing 68.2. The Illini own clear edges in effective shooting and defensive rebounding, averaging 41.2 boards per game with a double-digit rebounding margin.
- Northwestern’s path: The Wildcats are 10-12 and 3-5 away. Nick Martinelli drives the attack at 23.7 points per game with 6.8 rebounds, while Jayden Reid dishes 5.3 assists per game. Their issue has been perimeter volume and the defensive glass, an uneasy fit against Illinois’ size and spacing.

- Shot profile: Illinois averages 11.0 made threes per game and hits 35.6% of their outside shots. Northwestern’s perimeter clip sits near 32.0% with lower attempt volume, raising the importance of free throws and midrange shooting for the Wildcats.

Final Thoughts
Even without Boswell, Illinois holds decisive advantages in spacing, rim protection, and on the glass. Northwestern needs Martinelli to score efficiently and draw whistles while Reid manages turnovers for them to have a chance. The Illini’s combination of volume threes, a high free-throw rate near 79% and a dominant rebounding profile at home makes extended droughts less damaging, and their bench shooting has traveled into conference play. I recommend laying the points with the Illini here, as they should build on their impressive win over Nebraska in their last outing.
