Philadelphia Phillies vs Boston Red Sox Prediction: Suarez to Start Against Former Team

The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox close out their three-game set Thursday night at Fenway Park with the series tied at one game apiece. Boston grabbed a 3-1 win on Wednesday behind six strong innings from Sonny Gray and a clutch home run from Ceddanne Rafaela, while Philadelphia opened the series with a 2-1 victory fueled by another Kyle Schwarber blast. With both clubs sitting below expectations through the first six weeks of the season, this Phillies vs Red Sox series finale is an important one for both sides.
Jesus Luzardo has 57 strikeouts in 43.2 innings, though his overall results remain subpar. His 5.77 ERA and 1.40 WHIP tell the bigger story. He has allowed too much hard contact at key moments, and Fenway Park is not an easy place for a left-handed pitcher trying to limit damage from right-handed hitters. Trevor Story already homered in this series, and Boston’s lineup has handled velocity well lately.
Ranger Suárez has looked far more dependable. The Boston Red Sox lefty enters with a 2.77 ERA and a crisp 0.95 WHIP through 39 innings. He has surrendered only three home runs all season while consistently forcing weak contact. Philadelphia still has power throughout the lineup with Bryce Harper, Schwarber, and Adolis García, but Suárez has done an excellent job limiting free baserunners. If he works ahead in counts early, Boston should control the game.
This game shapes up as another tight, low-scoring contest at Fenway Park. Philadelphia still carries more raw power, though the pitching edge in this game belongs to Boston. Suárez has been significantly more reliable than Luzardo, and Boston’s bullpen enters the night in strong form after Wednesday’s clean finish. The Phillies can always break a game open with one swing from Schwarber or Harper, yet their offense has looked streaky away from Citizens Bank Park. With that in mind, I like the Sox to win this game at home.
