The 154th Open Championship closes out the 2026 major season with one of golf's strongest fields returning to Royal Birkdale from July 16-19. The famous links course in Southport hosts The Open for the 11th time, and conditions could be very different from what players typically expect. Recent hot, dry weather has left the fairways firm and fast, placing a premium on driving accuracy, distance control, and creativity around the greens. Scottie Scheffler arrives as the defending champion, Rory McIlroy continues his outstanding major campaign after winning the Masters earlier this season, and several European stars enter with strong links form that makes this one of the deepest major fields of the year.
Scheffler remains the clear favorite despite missing the cut at last week's Genesis Scottish Open, ending a streak of nearly 4 years without an early exit. That result may concern some bettors, but one poor week does little to erase the fact that he continues to rank among the PGA Tour leaders in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, approach play, and scoring consistency. He also has the advantage of arriving at Royal Birkdale early to study the course and prepare for conditions after winning the Claret Jug last year. Recent history also favors elite ball strikers at Birkdale, where Jordan Spieth, Padraig Harrington, and other major champions have lifted the trophy.
Rory McIlroy deserves significant respect after completing the career Grand Slam. His links record remains one of the strongest in modern golf, and his ability to hit towering long irons while controlling trajectory gives him every chance to contend. Tommy Fleetwood also deserves attention playing near his hometown, while Matt Fitzpatrick enters after a strong season that has included multiple victories. Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, and Cameron Young round out an impressive group capable of winning if Scheffler slips.
From a betting perspective, McIlroy offers the best combination of current form, statistical output, major championship experience, and consistency. His projected winning score is approximately 11-under par if weather remains relatively calm. Should stronger winds arrive for multiple rounds, expect the winning total to move closer to 7-under.

The betting board clearly reflects the respect sportsbooks have for Scheffler after another outstanding season. McIlroy sits comfortably as the second choice thanks to his major pedigree and excellent Open Championship history. Rahm offers attractive value considering his proven ability on links courses, while Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick receive additional support because of their familiarity with British conditions.
Among longer-priced players, Robert MacIntyre (+4100) stands out because of his outstanding links background and comfort playing in difficult weather. Bryson DeChambeau (+4300) owns enough power to shorten several holes if conditions stay dry, while Shane Lowry (+7000), the 2019 Open champion, always deserves consideration whenever links golf returns. Aaron Rai (+10000) has quietly developed into one of golf's most accurate ball strikers and could outperform his number if firm fairways reward precision over raw distance.
This parlay avoids relying on outright winners while still taking advantage of three golfers who consistently contend in major championships. Scheffler's floor remains remarkably high thanks to elite tee-to-green play, making a Top 10 finish an attractive foundation. McIlroy continues producing excellent results in golf's biggest events and has one of the strongest Open Championship resumes among active players.
Fleetwood completes the ticket because of his outstanding links record and extensive experience at Royal Birkdale. The emotional aspect of competing near home creates additional pressure, but his comfort on this style of course outweighs that concern. Combining placement markets instead of outright winners creates a more balanced betting approach while still providing attractive value.
Royal Birkdale has long been considered one of the fairest tests in The Open rotation. Unlike several other links venues that feature severe bounces and dramatic slopes, Birkdale rewards quality ball striking while still demanding creativity around the greens. Deep revetted bunkers remain a constant threat, and players who consistently find the fairway gain a significant advantage.
This year's championship may play differently because of unusually dry conditions. Fast-running fairways could allow shorter hitters to keep pace off the tee while making approach shots much harder to judge. Players who control trajectory, manage spin effectively, and remain patient throughout the week should have the greatest opportunity to contend. With another elite field assembled and favorable scoring conditions possible early in the tournament, The Open appears set for another memorable finish led by the game's biggest names.
