Michelsen could hardly have asked for a cleaner path through his first 4 matches. The 22-year-old opened by beating Federico Cina 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, then produced one of the tournament’s more impressive early upsets against No. 16 seed Brandon Nakashima. He followed that with another straight-sets victory against Daniel Merida before defeating No. 27 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round. He enters the quarterfinal having won all 12 sets he has played.
That run is a major reason this market is as competitive as it is. Michelsen has served effectively, handled pressure points well, and avoided the prolonged dips that can turn best-of-5-set matches.
Tiafoe’s tournament started much differently. Martin Damm pushed him to 5 sets in the opening round, with Tiafoe eventually escaping 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Since then, however, his level has risen sharply. He defeated Rei Sakamoto 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 and Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 before producing his best result of the tournament against Medvedev, winning 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The Medvedev result was especially important for Tiafoe. Tiafoe had historically struggled in that matchup, yet controlled the biggest points against a former US Open champion. Now the test will be sustaining that level in this match.
The central tactical question is whether Michelsen can force Tiafoe into repeated neutral baseline exchanges. Michelsen’s game has become increasingly difficult to attack because of his serve, court positioning, and ability to change direction without requiring a perfect setup ball. Against Cina in the opening round, he won 81% of his first-serve points while also winning 51% of his return points. That combination allowed him to control the match.
Tiafoe has more ways to interrupt that pattern. He can serve-and-volley, use the backhand slice, change pace, attack short balls and finish at the net. His athleticism also gives him a better chance than most players Michelsen has faced this fortnight of turning defensive positions into offense.
This is Michelsen’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal. For Tiafoe, deep US Open runs have become familiar territory. The 28-year-old reached the semifinals here in 2022 and 2024, and this is his fourth US Open quarterfinal in the last 5 editions. He has repeatedly shown an ability to lift his level in front of a home crowd, particularly in New York.
That experience is difficult to price precisely, but it becomes more important if the match reaches late pressure situations. Michelsen has handled every test brilliantly so far, yet he has never played a Grand Slam quarterfinal with a place in the final 4 sitting directly in front of him.
Tiafoe knows exactly what that environment feels like, and his 2026 season also supports the argument that this US Open run is more than a short burst. Tiafoe won the ATP 500 title in Halle earlier this year and reached the Cincinnati Masters final shortly before New York, despite having undergone surgery on his right hand.
At a 56% Polymarket price, Tiafoe is still slightly undervalued in my projection. Michelsen’s tournament has been excellent, and a 44% implied probability gives him plenty of paths to victory. But Tiafoe’s victory over Medvedev represents the best single result either player has produced in New York, while his 2 previous wins against Michelsen provide additional evidence that the matchup suits him.
I make Tiafoe approximately 61% to advance, producing a 5% edge over the current 56% implied probability. With the combination of greater tactical variety, substantial US Open experience, and stronger recent results against elite opposition, Frances Tiafoe to win is my preferred prediction at prices up to 58%.
