One of the heaviest favorites in all of Olympic swimming during the Paris Olympic meet is in this race. Canada’s Summer McIntosh is the world record holder in this event, setting the latest iteration of that record in Toronto in May of 2024. It would take nothing short of a miracle for someone to knock McIntosh off her pedestal in this event, especially after McIntosh grabbed her first Olympic medal earlier this week, taking silver in the 400m freestyle.
Olympic Women’s 400m Individual Medley Major Storylines
When it comes to storylines, they just about all center around McIntosh going into the Olympic women’s 400m IM final. McIntosh is swimming against her previous bests in this event and Olympic history rather than the field here. McIntosh’s world record swim was nearly two full seconds better than the Olympic record in this event, which was set in 2016 in Rio by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu. The Olympic record and world record are both in danger here.
If you are looking for a storyline concerning the rest of the field in this race, you could argue that the race for the other medals will be compelling. There is a group of eight or so swimmers that could realistically contend for a medal behind McIntosh. And while it is highly unlikely that those swimmers will have a chance at gold, given just how good the Canadian is at this unique swimming event.
Olympic Women’s 400m IM Medal Contenders
The list of medal contenders behind McIntosh is a long one, as there isn’t anyone else expected to run away from the field with the Canadian in this race. Among those with a chance to win silver or bronze here are Katie Grimes of the United States, Freya Colbert of Great Britain, and Vivien Jackl of Hungary. Grimes won silver in this event in the 2022 and 2023 world championships, finishing behind McIntosh in both of those races, a result we could see again here.
Women’s 400m Individual Medley Betting Prediction: Summer McIntosh (-2000)
It would take nothing short of a miracle for McIntosh to fail to win the Olympic women’s 400m individual medley. While we don’t recommend putting down more than you are financially comfortable with, your money would appear to be safe with McIntosh, even if the returns on investment are small. The Canadian will win gold here and will do so in memorable fashion on Monday.
