There are three main favorites going into the Olympic women’s 200m individual medley. At the top of the list is American Kate Douglass, who took the bronze in this event in the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo. Then there is Summer McIntosh of Canada, who dusted the field in the 400m IM and is looking for another individual gold here. And Kaylee McKeown of Australia is right there with them, with her elite backstroke likely to keep her in contention for gold.

McIntosh is the biggest story going into the 200m IM on the women’s side. At just 17 years of age she has already proven herself as an elite medley swimmer at these games. Another gold would confirm that she is simply a cut above the rest of the world in that discipline, as she is very consistent across all four strokes that make up the individual medley.
But the major storyline going into this race could be just how wide open this race is. That is partially due to the fact that the top medalists from the last Olympics are nowhere near the gold medal picture this time around. It is also a product of the short distance of this race, as swimmers are tasked with swimming just one pool length with each stroke, meaning that the swimmer who does the best job of staying underwater off the walls could take this race.

The three medals in this race are expected to go to Douglass, McIntosh, and McKeown in some order. But we could see some other medal contenders emerge in this short-distance medley. Alex Walsh of the United States did win silver in the final of this event in the Tokyo Olympics and could hang around in this race also. Meanwhile, Canadian Sydney Pickrem has several 200m individual medley medals at world championship events and should put pressure on the top-three in this race as well.
