Odds from FanDuel Sportsbook
South Africa’s Tatjana Smith is the odds-on favorite to win this race and deservedly so after looking at her history in this distance and discipline. She won gold in this event in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and won the 2023 World Championship gold in Japan as well. The only other swimmer inside of +1000 to win gold in this event is Kate Douglass of the United States, who has silver medals from the 2023 and 2024 World Championships in this race to her name.
Olympic Women’s 200m Breaststroke Major Storylines
We have seen several swimmers create opportunities to win multiple individual medals in these Paris Olympics. Tatjana Smith is in that club, entering this race with a chance to claim both the 100m and 200m breaststroke golds. The difference between most of those swimmers and Smith is the fact that she might be stronger in the 200m breaststroke than she is in the 100m, making her the one to watch in this race.
Also a huge storyline in the Olympic women’s 200m breaststroke is whether or not Douglass can finally rise up the podium to win a major 200m breaststroke event. She has competed in three World Championships over the last three years and has taken two silvers and a bronze in those races. She will be seeking vindication against a very tough field in this race as she seeks her first Olympic gold medal.
Olympic Women’s 200m Breaststroke Medal Contenders
As we mentioned previously, no other swimmer is inside of +1000 to win the Olympic women’s 200m breaststroke final on Thursday. But there are a couple of swimmers worth looking at when it comes to filling out the podium alongside the expected top-two of Smith and Douglass. Tes Schouten of Netherlands won the 200m breaststroke gold medal at the 2024 World Championships and could easily medal here, as could Ireland’s Mona McSharry, who claimed bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Women’s 200m Breaststroke Betting Prediction: Tatjana Smith (-210)
We are not going to overthink things in the women’s 200m breaststroke final. Tatjana Smith has proven time and time again that she is the best in the world at the breaststroke, including in the 200m version of it. Look for Smith to come out on top again here and to win her second individual gold medal of the Paris meet while representing South Africa.
