The Olympic men’s 1500m freestyle event at the Paris Olympics is set to be much more competitive than the women’s 1500m freestyle. Without a truly dominant figure like Katie Ledecky to make this long-distance race a foregone conclusion, the longer race time in this event will be anything but boring. Here, we break down the odds for the 1500m freestyle on the men’s side and pick our winner for this endurance-focused swimming competition.

Odds from Sportzino
Daniel Wiffen of Ireland is the favorite to come away with the gold medal in the Olympic men’s 1500m freestyle final. The Irishman already has one Olympic gold under his belt in these games, having won the men’s 800m freestyle final thanks to a strong close to that race. He and American Bobby Finke are the only two swimmers in this event that are inside of +500 to win the gold medal.
Olympic Men’s 1500m Freestyle Major Storylines
Wiffen and Finke are the two major storylines coming into the Olympic men’s 1500m freestyle final. Wiffen has a chance to sweep the two long-distance freestyle races at the Paris Olympics, following in the footsteps of Finke, who accomplished that feat at the Tokyo Olympics back in 2021. Doing so would be an incredible achievement, especially while representing a nation like Ireland that does not have a traditionally strong swimming tradition when compared to Finke’s United States.
Finke, meanwhile, has one more chance here to hold off Wiffen to defend a gold medal that he won in Tokyo. While Wiffen has dominated these long-distance freestyle races in 2024, winning the 800m free gold at these games and both the 800m free and 1500m free at the World Championships in Doha this year, Finke was within a second of Wiffen in the 800m freestyle earlier this week. He certainly has a chance to grab the gold here, even if he enters as the underdog.
Olympic Men’s 1500m Freestyle Medal Contenders
Behind with Wiffen and Finke, the race for the final podium spot should be a compelling one. There are three main contenders to complete the podium: Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri, Germany’s Florian Wellbrock, and Australia’s Samuel Short are all in contention to finish in the top-three in this race. Paltrinieri won gold in this event in the Rio Olympics in 2016, while Wellbrock won bronze in the 1500m freestyle final in Tokyo in 2021. All three will try and put pressure on the top-two here.
Men’s 1500m Freestyle Betting Prediction: Daniel Wiffen (-164)
While Finke’s history in this event is certainly impressive, we will take Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen to come away with the gold medal to complete his sweep of the 800m and 1500m freestyle. Wiffen finished strong in the 800m freestyle to ward off the challenges of Finke and Paltrinieri and we think the gas tank of Wiffen will help him to outlast that duo again in this final.
