The women’s 500-meter short-track speed skating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan is shaping up to be one of the most electrifying moments in the early speed skating schedule during the Games. Scheduled with heats on February 10 and medal finals on February 12, this sprint distance is all about explosive power, perfect timing, and razor–thin margins. With 32 qualified athletes representing 16 nations, the field features a clear favorite with the rest of the world aiming for her. Before this contest begins, continue reading to get my Olympic women's 500m speed skating prediction.
Below are the most recent odds available for the outright gold medal winner in the women’s 500 meter short-track event:
There are several compelling narratives at play leading into this sprint. Velzeboer’s position as the favorite comes from a combination of consistent World Cup results and the Netherlands’ traditional strength in short track. Her slick starts and ability to maintain top gear through the final stretch make her hard to beat if she stays out of trouble.
The United States enters with two serious contenders. Kristen Santos-Griswold has been in excellent form this season, securing medals across individual distances on the ISU World Tour and showing she can handle the pressure of big races. Corinne Stoddard has also posted strong results, finishing high in the world circuit standings and earning herself a reputation as a tough competitor in sprint distances.
Canada’s Courtney Sarault is another intriguing skater here, having led Canada’s short-track charge on the international scene with strong performances across multiple distances during the season. Arianna Fontana of Italy, a veteran with Olympic experience and previous medals, is skating on home ice. While she may not be the favorite, her experience cannot be discounted in a field where split-second decisions matter most.
Pick: Xandra Velzeboer (NED) ATS PRO
Confidence: 4 out of 5
From a betting perspective, Velzeboer offers the best combination of value and probability of victory. While sprint distances can be cruel with crashes, penalties, and interference calls altering expected outcomes, her season results show a level of consistency rare even in such an unpredictable discipline. I will take the betting favorite here to get another gold for the Dutch in speed skating.
