The United States can take a major step toward the knockout stage when it faces Australia in a Group D match on June 19. Both teams opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup with victories, setting up a showdown that could determine first place in the group. The Americans arrive after an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay, while Australia turned heads with a victory over Turkey. With qualification scenarios already taking shape, this match is a huge second group-stage fixture for two sides trying to reach the next round.
The United States looked like one of the more dangerous teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup during its opening match. Folarin Balogun scored twice against Paraguay, the midfield controlled possession for long stretches, and the attack consistently created quality chances. Mauricio Pochettino's side played with speed and purpose, generating pressure that Paraguay struggled to handle.
Australia deserves plenty of respect after defeating Turkey, but this matchup presents a different challenge. The Socceroos are expected to defend deep, stay compact, and look for opportunities on the counterattack or from set pieces. That approach can keep matches competitive, yet it often limits their attacking opportunities against stronger opponents, especially in what amounts to an away game on US soil.
The biggest concern for the United States is the fitness of Christian Pulisic, who has been managing a calf issue. Even if he is limited, the Americans showed against Paraguay that they have enough attacking depth to create chances through Balogun, Giovanni Reyna, Malik Tillman, and Brenden Aaronson.
Australia's defensive organization should prevent this from becoming a blowout, but over 90 minutes, the United States has advantages in creativity, ball possession, and finishing quality. A 2-0 victory is the most likely outcome according to our projections.
Total Parlay Odds: +850
The foundation of this parlay is a United States victory. The Americans were dominant in their opener and possess more attacking talent throughout the squad. Playing on home soil should also provide a boost in front of what figures to be a heavily pro-USA crowd.
Balogun is a logical goalscorer selection after his two-goal performance against Paraguay. He remains the focal point of the American attack and consistently finds dangerous positions inside the penalty area. If the United States scores multiple goals, there is a strong chance Balogun contributes directly.
The under 2.5 goals leg goes along with the expected match script. Australia generally prefers a conservative setup against stronger opposition and rarely opens matches up unnecessarily. Even if the United States controls possession, the Socceroos are capable of keeping the scoreline respectable.
The United States enters this contest full of confidence after one of its strongest World Cup performances in recent memory. The 4-1 victory over Paraguay showcased the attacking identity Pochettino has been trying to establish. The midfield trio moved the ball quickly, the fullbacks pushed forward aggressively, and Balogun rewarded that service with two well-taken finishes.
Perhaps most encouraging for American supporters was the balance throughout the lineup. Tyler Adams provided defensive stability, while Reyna and Tillman frequently found pockets of space between the lines. When the Americans won possession, they transitioned forward with speed and purpose.
Australia took a different path to three points. The Socceroos relied on defensive discipline and physical play to frustrate Turkey before finding the breakthrough. Manager Tony Popovic has built a team that competes hard in every phase of the game, making Australia a difficult opponent even when it does not dominate possession.
One player to watch is Nestory Irankunda. The young attacker offers pace and directness that can threaten defenses during transition moments. If Australia is going to pull off an upset, it will likely need a standout performance from Irankunda or a set-piece goal against the run of play.
Australia should keep the match competitive for stretches, but the United States has more avenues to score and greater overall depth. If the Americans maintain the level they showed against Paraguay, they should create enough opportunities to secure another three points and move closer to the Round of 32.
