Turkey and Paraguay enter Friday’s Group D showdown knowing that another defeat could leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Both teams opened the tournament with disappointing losses, but the circumstances were very different. Turkey fell 2-0 to Australia despite enjoying long stretches of possession, while Paraguay was overwhelmed 4-1 by the United States in a match that exposed major defensive issues. With three points likely needed to stay in the race for qualification, expect a tense and highly competitive contest at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
Turkey remains the more talented side on paper despite their opening defeat. Arda Guler and Hakan Calhanoglu give Vincenzo Montella's squad a creative edge that Paraguay struggled to match against the United States. While Turkey failed to score against Australia, they created enough attacking sequences to suggest a rebound is coming.
Paraguay's 4-1 loss to the United States highlighted concerns at both ends of the pitch. Gustavo Alfaro's team conceded three first-half goals and looked vulnerable whenever the Americans increased the tempo. Miguel Almiron and Julio Enciso provide attacking quality, but Paraguay will need a much cleaner defensive performance to avoid another setback.
Parlay Odds: +325
The foundation of this parlay is Turkey to win. The Turkish squad has more proven attacking talent and enters the match as the betting favorite after Paraguay's difficult opener. Turkey should enjoy a possession advantage and create more chances in dangerous areas.
Under 2.5 goals fits the expected game script. Despite Paraguay conceding four times against the United States, knockout-style urgency often produces tighter matches in the second group fixture. Both teams understand the cost of another defeat, which should limit unnecessary risks.
This is one of the most important matches of the second group-stage slate. Australia's upset victory over Turkey and the United States' dominant win against Paraguay have left both sides playing from behind in Group D. A draw would not eliminate either nation, but it would place enormous pressure on them in the final matchday.
Turkey entered the tournament with considerable optimism. The squad features several players competing at the highest levels of European football, including Calhanoglu and Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler. Against Australia, Turkey controlled possession but struggled to convert territorial advantage into clear scoring chances. That inefficiency ultimately proved costly.
Montella's side should find more room to operate in this matchup. Paraguay's defensive structure was exposed repeatedly by the United States, especially in transition. Turkey's technical midfield could create similar problems if Paraguay pushes forward in search of goals.
Paraguay's return to the World Cup after a long absence got off to a rough start. The 4-1 scoreline against the United States was a product of defensive lapses, poor discipline, and an inability to handle sustained pressure. Alfaro's squad collected multiple yellow cards and found itself chasing the game after an early own goal put them behind.
The encouraging sign for Paraguay was that they continued attacking despite the deficit. Enciso remains a dynamic playmaker capable of changing a match with a single moment of quality, while Almiron provides pace and direct running from wide positions. If Paraguay can stay compact defensively, they have enough talent to keep the match competitive.
One key battle will be in midfield. Turkey's ability to dictate possession through Calhanoglu and Guler could determine the tempo from the opening whistle. Paraguay may choose a more conservative approach after their defensive struggles against the United States, focusing on counterattacks rather than extended possession.
Turkey appear better positioned to respond after their opening loss. Their defeat to Australia was disappointing, but it came against an organized defense and was not accompanied by major structural concerns. Paraguay, meanwhile, must repair several issues in a very short period of time. Turkey's superior midfield quality should make the difference. Expect Paraguay to battle hard and create chances, yet Turkey's attacking creators give them the edge in a must-win situation.
