Sassuolo vs Juventus Preview: Can Juve Turn This Into Another Low-Event Game?

Sassuolo have made an entertaining start to the Serie A season. Alberto "Aquaman" Aquilani’s side have scored five and conceded five through three league matches, with every game producing at least three goals. Their latest outing was a 2-2 draw at Bologna in which Sassuolo led twice before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer.
Juventus have looked almost completely different. Luciano Spalletti’s team have beaten Frosinone 1-0 and Parma 2-0 before drawing 1-1 with Milan. They have allowed only one goal through three games, and the underlying shot numbers suggest that defensive record is more than early-season luck. That makes the Under 2.5 goals market at 47¢ on Polymarket the side of this matchup I find more appealing than simply backing Juventus to win.
Editor's notes
“I’m leaning Under 2.5 here because Juventus have been extremely difficult to create chances against so far. Sassuolo have played three higher-scoring games, so there is some risk, but this is a much tougher defensive matchup than anything they have faced yet. At 47¢, I think the Under is the more attractive way to approach the game.”
Why the Total
Polymarket currently prices Under 2.5 goals at 47¢, compared with 54¢ for the Over. Juventus are also 58¢ to win, with Sassuolo at 18¢ and the draw at 24¢. The total is more appealing than the Juventus moneyline. Juve have conceded only once through three Serie A matches and allowed just six shots on target, while none of their games have produced more than two goals. Sassuolo’s three matches have all gone Over 2.5, but Juventus represent a significant step up defensively. At 47¢, the Under only needs to hit slightly less than half the time to justify the trade.

The market is effectively split on the total. Polymarket currently prices Over 2.5 at 54¢ and Under 2.5 at 47¢, meaning traders are giving the Under roughly a 47% implied probability.
That feels low given how Juventus have controlled games defensively. Through three Serie A matches, Juve have allowed only 18 total shots and six shots on target. Milan managed just three shots against them last weekend, while another analysis of the match put Milan at only 0.11 xG and Juventus at roughly 0.8 xG allowed across the entire season so far.
The obvious concern is Sassuolo. All three of their league matches have gone Over 2.5, and both teams have scored in each. But this is also by far the strongest defensive structure they have faced so far.
The most persuasive number in this matchup is not Juventus' four goals scored. It is the 18 shots conceded in 270 minutes.
Frosinone managed 11, Parma just four and Milan only three. Across those matches, opponents put only six attempts on target. Juventus have also produced 55 shots themselves, so games are generally being played where Spalletti wants them played.
Against Milan, Juventus pressed aggressively but were also comfortable dropping into a compact shape when necessary. Spalletti later said his team had tried to take the initiative and raise the tempo, while Manuel Locatelli admitted they still needed to be more ruthless around goal.
That combination matters for the Under: Juventus are controlling territory without yet converting that control into high-scoring performances.
Juventus are also dealing with an unusually thin squad.
Kenan Yildiz, Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram are among those unavailable, while Weston McKennie and Andrea Cambiaso remain doubts. Pape Matar Sarr is expected to be available from the bench, and Teun Koopmeiners is projected to return to the starting midfield.
Normally, absences of that scale might make me hesitant about Juventus altogether. For the total, however, they arguably strengthen the case.
Juve have taken 55 shots but scored only four times in Serie A. Randal Kolo Muani alone has eight attempts without scoring. The chances are arriving, but this is not currently an attack that deserves to be priced as though two or three Juventus goals are inevitable.
There is no point pretending Sassuolo's numbers fit neatly with an Under.
They lost 2-1 at Atalanta, beat Torino 2-1 and drew 2-2 at Bologna. Aquilani's side have therefore both scored and conceded in every league match. They also caused Bologna genuine problems in transition, with Josh Doig and Vasilije Adžić putting Sassuolo ahead twice last weekend.
Domenico Berardi is expected to start after Cristian Volpato suffered a hamstring injury against Bologna. That gives Sassuolo another attacking threat and is probably the strongest reason not to push the Under too aggressively.
Still, Juventus are a substantial step up defensively from Sassuolo's first three opponents. The question is whether Sassuolo can drag Juve into their type of game. So far, nobody has managed it.
For the Under 2.5 to cash, Juventus need to dictate the pace and prevent Sassuolo from creating the transition-heavy game we saw in Bologna. A Juventus opening goal would not necessarily hurt the position; a controlled 1-0 or 2-0 is entirely consistent with how Spalletti's side have started the season.
The danger is an early Sassuolo goal. It would force Juventus to chase while giving Berardi and Laurienté space to attack on the break, exactly the scenario that could turn this into another 2-1 or 2-2 Sassuolo game.
At 47¢, though, I would rather back the strongest early trend in the matchup: Juventus have made games extremely difficult to open up. Sassuolo have shown they can score, but asking them to maintain their three-game Over streak against a team allowing only six shots on target all season looks like the more demanding side of the argument.
Prediction: Sassuolo 0-2 Juventus
