Venezia vs Fiorentina Prediction: The Goals Market Looks Better Than Picking a Side

Venezia and Fiorentina meet at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo on Friday with both clubs still searching for their first Serie A point of the season. Venezia have lost 2-0 to Lecce, 2-0 to Milan and 3-2 to Frosinone, while Fiorentina sit bottom after defeats to Roma, Frosinone and Torino. The Viola have already responded by sacking Fabio Grosso and bringing Paolo Vanoli back as head coach.

That managerial change makes the moneyline difficult to price. Polymarket currently has Fiorentina at only 38¢ and Venezia at 34¢, which shows how little separation traders see between them. The better angle is Over 2.5 goals at 56¢. Both defenses have started badly, but the underlying numbers also suggest these attacks are capable of producing more than their raw goal totals show.

Over 2.5 goals is the preferred prediction at 56¢ on Polymarket, an implied probability of 56%.

The temptation is to focus on Fiorentina's managerial bounce, but backing the Viola outright means making a fairly big assumption about how quickly Vanoli can repair a team that has conceded nine goals in three league games. Venezia are hardly an appealing alternative at 0-3-0 either.

The total removes some of that uncertainty.

Venezia's last game produced five goals and more than four combined expected goals. Fiorentina's last two performances have been more productive offensively than their results suggest. Add Venezia's problems at center-back and there are enough routes toward three goals without requiring either team to suddenly become reliable.

Venezia's Two Goals at Frosinone Were Not a Fluke

Venezia finally got on the scoresheet in Sunday's 3-2 loss at Frosinone, but the more important number was 2.17 xG from 15 shots. They also generated four big chances despite eventually losing the game.

That was not their first game with attacking opportunities. In the opening 2-0 loss to Lecce, Venezia recorded 19 shots and approximately 2.05 xG without scoring. Their 2-0 defeat at Milan was much quieter — around 0.8 xG — but against considerably stronger opposition.

The early record therefore looks worse than the attacking process. Venezia have only two league goals, but they have already produced two games in which their chance creation was sufficient to score multiple times.

Fiorentina's One Goal Masks Better Recent Attacking Numbers

Fiorentina's attack was almost nonexistent in the 4-0 loss at Roma, producing only 0.41 xG. Since then, however, there has been a clear improvement.

Against Frosinone, Fiorentina somehow lost 3-0 after recording 25 shots and 1.94 xG. Against Torino they generated another 1.48 xG from 14 shots, including six efforts on target, but again scored only once. Across those two matches, Fiorentina created 3.42 xG and scored one goal.

That does not guarantee a finishing correction against Venezia, but it does make the simple "Fiorentina cannot score" argument less convincing.

Vanoli could also change the front three. Mateo Pellegrino scored against Torino, while Wilfried Gnonto is among the players pushing for a bigger role under the returning coach.

Venezia's Defensive Absences Matter More Than the Managerial Narrative

The biggest reason to prefer the total may be Venezia's back line.

Armel Bella-Kotchap was forced off early against Frosinone with a muscular problem, while Marin Sverko and Bartol Franjic are also unavailable. Venezia's official squad announcement confirms a reshuffled group of defensive options for the game.

That matters against a Fiorentina team desperately trying to reset under a new coach. Vanoli has only had a few days to work with the squad, so expecting a polished tactical transformation is unrealistic. A more immediate response could simply mean greater intensity, more aggressive pressing and faster attacking play against a patched-up Venezia defense.

Vanoli Is the Biggest Threat to the Over

There is one significant concern. Fiorentina's defensive organization under Grosso was poor enough that fixing it should be Vanoli's first job.

If he immediately drops the defensive line, reduces risk and prioritizes avoiding a fourth straight defeat, this could turn into a far slower game than the early-season numbers suggest. Fiorentina's 1-9 goal difference also creates obvious pressure to stop conceding before worrying about attacking fluency.

But four days is very little time to rebuild a defensive structure, particularly away from home against a Venezia side that just produced its best attacking performance of the season.

What Could Decide the Match

The Over needs both teams to continue creating the type of chances seen in their most recent games rather than reverting to their raw scoring averages.

Venezia generating more than two expected goals at Frosinone was encouraging, while Fiorentina's 3.42 xG across their last two defeats suggests their single goal during that stretch undersells their attacking performance. At the other end, these teams have already conceded 16 Serie A goals between them in six combined matches.

Vanoli introducing immediate defensive discipline is the strongest argument against this trade. Still, with uncertainty surrounding both moneylines and Venezia dealing with defensive absences, Over 2.5 at 56¢ is the cleaner way to approach Friday's game.
