Lazio host AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday with both clubs unbeaten in Serie A and separated by only two points. Lazio have won all three league matches, while Milan have taken seven points, but the underlying numbers are much closer than those records suggest. Lazio have generated 4.17 xG and conceded 3.06 xGA, while Milan sit at 3.83 xG and 3.48 xGA, showing that the Rossoneri have been coming out on top in close matches so far this season. Milan are favorites at 42¢ on Polymarket, yet neither the current price nor the early-season data gives us enough separation to force a bet.
Why Our Model Is Passing

“Milan may deserve to be slight favorites given home advantage and a slid start to the season, but the underlying numbers do not show a large enough gap to justify treating 42¢ as clear value. Lazio have created 4.17 xG while conceding 3.06, giving them a better early xG differential than Milan’s 3.83 xG and 3.48 xGA. The market is also already pricing a low-event game, with Under 2.5 at 58¢. Our projections lean Milan and the under, but neither clears the margin required for a confident trade.”
Polymarket Pricing
Milan are currently 43¢ to win, Lazio 28¢, with the draw accounting for the remaining probability. The totals market leans strongly toward a controlled game, with Under 2.5 goals at 58¢ and Over 2.5 at 43¢. Lazio +1.5 is already expensive at 84¢, while Milan -1.5 trades at only 19¢. The traditional sportsbook market tells a similar story. Milan are around +130, Lazio +230 and the draw +225, while Under 2.5 sits around -150. Once the vig is removed, Milan’s fair market probability is only a little above 40%, which is close to where our projection lands.

Lazio have taken nine points from nine, but their 4.17 xG and 3.06 xGA produce an expected-goal differential of only +1.11. They have scored four goals and conceded once, so their actual +3 goal difference is already running ahead of the chance-quality numbers.
Their shot profile is solid rather than dominant. Lazio are averaging 14.67 shots but only 3.67 on target per game, meaning just 25% of their attempts have tested the goalkeeper. That is a useful warning when assessing whether a perfect start is sustainable against stronger opposition. Genoa, Bologna and Udinese hardly represent the class of the division, and taking on Milan is a significant step up.
Milan average 55.8% possession, significantly above Lazio’s 49.3%, but that territorial advantage has not yet translated into a superior xG profile. Their 3.83 xG trails Lazio’s 4.17, while their 3.48 xGA is also worse than Lazio’s 3.06.
They are also taking fewer shots at 12.67 per game, with only 3.33 reaching the target. Milan have scored five times from 3.83 xG, so their finishing has provided more of the attacking difference than chance creation itself.
That is why Milan at 42¢ is not automatically attractive simply because they enter as the more highly rated side.
Lazio’s best route is through disrupting Milan before they establish long possession spells. Davide Frattesi has already scored three league goals and gives Lazio vertical running from midfield, but their absences are significant: Nicolò Rovella, Danilo Cataldi and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru are among the midfield players expected to miss out.
That should give Milan more control of possession, but the key question is whether they can turn that control into chances. Lazio have allowed only 3.06 xGA from 44 opposition shots, while Milan themselves are creating only 0.10 xG per shot from their 38 attempts.
If Lazio keep Milan outside the most dangerous central areas, possession alone may not be enough to justify the favorite price.
The case for Under 2.5 is much stronger than a simple head-to-head trend. The teams have combined for only 7.00 xGA through six league matches, and neither is producing especially high-value chances consistently.
Our model estimates Lazio at 0.97 xG and Milan at 1.51, perilously close to the 2.5 goal threshold.
That is a good example of the distinction between likely and valuable. The under may be the most probable total outcome, but at 58¢ the market is already charging an appropriate price.
The biggest question is whether Milan can turn their expected possession advantage into better chances than they have created so far.
Lazio’s perfect record overstates their dominance, but their +1.11 xGD is actually stronger than Milan’s +0.35, while they also generate more shots. Milan have the deeper attacking ceiling and should control more of the ball, yet the early data does not justify treating them as substantially superior.
That leaves us with a narrow Milan lean rather than a bet.
