✅ Belgium will be the more aggressive of the two teams, needing the win to control their destiny. Expect them to control much of the play against Croatia, who only need the draw.
✅ The Belgian ‘Golden Generation’ hasn’t lost to Croatia in over a decade. Belgium went unbeaten against Croatia in 2014 UEFA World Cup Qualifying and most recently beat them 1-0 in a June 2021 friendly.
✅ Romelu Lukaku is expected to appear for Belgium and has scored three goals in the last two matchups with Croatia. Having Lukaku out there for any amount of time will be a major boost for the Belgians and their attack.

Belgium
It certainly felt as if everything was falling apart after Morocco put two past Belgium to end their unbeaten streak in the World Cup at 13 matches. However, all hope is not lost as Belgium controls their destiny and is in with a win over Croatia.
Beating Croatia is easier said than done, especially if you believe the reports of infighting amongst the Belgium squad. If the tabloid coverage out there is to be believed, there are deep rifts amongst longtime teammates in Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and Romelu Lukaku amongst others. Manager Roberto Martinez needs to motivate his side to stay focused on the task at hand before things fall apart with an elimination from the competition.
Martinez also needs to play his top striker in Lukaku for a longer period than his last minute cameo against Morocco. Facing an exit from the tournament, Lukaku’s match fitness needs to be tested as his presence is required to bag the goals needed to get to the Round of 16.
Croatia
Croatia survived a brief scare when they fell behind 1-0 early to Canada to eventually earn a massive 4-1 win. The beatdown over Canada also gave the Croatians the last laugh after manager John Herdman proclaimed his team was going to ‘eff’ them.
Croatia won’t have locker room material to motivate them against Belgium but they will have an extremely confident striker in Andrej Kramaric. After scoring a brace to put away Canada, the Bundesliga forward should be buzzing and ready to add to his goal tally against Belgium.
The key for Croatia is in the midfield battle of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic and Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne. KDB is arguably the best central midfielder in the world but Croatia’s depth could neutralize him through strength in numbers. Stopping KDB’s playmaking will be key as all it takes is one moment of playmaking brilliance to see Croatia concede a goal.
