Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla – 03/07/20 – La Liga Odds, Preview & Prediction

A top five battle is on the schedule Saturday March 7, 2020 as the fifth place Atletico Madrid host third place Sevilla. Both of these teams are in a tight battle for the Champions League and dropping points in this one will be a tough blow for either team.

Atletico Madrid enter the weekend in a tight race for a Champions League spot next season. Atleti currently sits in fifth place, which is the first Europa League spot, but are just two points off third place Sevilla. Just two points off third place, Atleti are also just three points ahead of Valencia in seventh place. It is going to be a tight final two months in Spain. Atletico Madrid are also still alive in the Champions League as they prepare for their Round of 16 second leg tie with Liverpool next week – Atleti lead 1-0 after the first leg.

Sevilla enter this weekend as one of five teams, within five points of each other, all battling for the final two Champions League spots. Sevilla have the upper hand on the other five teams and could get some cushion with a big road win Saturday. The club are also preparing for the Round of 16 Europa League clash with AS Roma in a few weeks.

Below is my pick for the La Liga action between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.

Atletico Madrid (-115) vs Sevilla (+380) Draw (+220)

Atletico Madrid has a disappointing showing last time out as the club could only muster a 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Espanyol. Atleti went down 1-0 in the first half, thanks to an own goal, but were able to tie it up early on in the second half. The draw still pushes Atleti unbeaten run to five games, but they will be disappointed with getting only one point last weekend. Atleti are the fourth best home team in Spain this season, having won 28 points thanks to an 8-4-1 record.

Sevilla used late game heroics to come away with a 3-2 win over 10-man Osasuna last weekend. Sevilla led 2-0 at the half, and then went a man up in the 54th minute, but still conceded two goals to 10-man Osasuna. A 93rd minute goal by Youssef En Nesyri gave Sevilla all three points. The late win pushed Sevilla’s unbeaten run to five games. Sevilla are the second best road team in La Liga having won 23 points thanks to a 7-2-4 record.

Series History: These clubs have played three straight 1-1 draws and have been pretty even over the past 10 meetings. Each team has won three times, and they have played to four draws, in the last 10 meetings between these two.

Game Prediction: I expect this to be a very boring game, but I like Atletico Madrid -115 to get the win at home.

2020 Results: 28-19
