The Tampa Bay Lightning head north to face the Buffalo Sabres on Monday in a late-season Atlantic Division clash with playoff positioning on the line. Both teams have been among the most productive offensive groups in the NHL this season, and with only a handful of games remaining, every point carries added weight. Tampa Bay enters with a two-point edge in the standings over Buffalo, which a regulation win for the Sabres could erase. Before the action begins in Buffalo, continue reading for my Lightning vs Buffalo prediction.
Recent form
Tampa Bay enters this game having won 4 of its last 5 contests, including an impressive offensive showing in a recent 6-3 win over the Penguins that pushed them to the 100-point mark on the season. Buffalo, meanwhile, has gone 2-3 over its last 5 games, showing some inconsistency despite remaining near the top of the Atlantic Division standings. Both teams have proven capable of scoring in bunches, but Tampa Bay has shown slightly more reliability down the stretch.
Goaltending
This matchup likely features Andrei Vasilevskiy for Tampa Bay and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for Buffalo. My projection models suggest a narrow edge for Buffalo in save percentage, hovering around 90% compared to 89% for Tampa Bay. However, Vasilevskiy’s track record in high-pressure games still carries weight, especially against strong offensive teams. The difference in net could ultimately come down to defensive support rather than pure goaltending numbers.
Key skaters
Tampa Bay continues to be led by Nikita Kucherov, who has reached 125 points this season with 42 goals and 83 assists. He remains one of the league’s most dangerous playmakers. Brayden Point and Anthony Cirelli have also contributed, giving Tampa multiple scoring lines. Buffalo counters with Tage Thompson, who has 38 goals and 40 assists, along with Rasmus Dahlin, who anchors the blue line and contributes offensively with a team-high 51 assists.
This game should go down as one of the tighter contests on the Monday schedule, with both teams nearly identical in offensive output and overall record. Buffalo’s home ice and slightly better projected goaltending numbers help balance the matchup, but Tampa Bay’s defensive edge and recent consistency provide a slight advantage in their direction. I think this is a very close game, so instead of taking a side, I'll go with the over as these teams have had no trouble scoring against each other throughout the season.
