Sweden and Slovakia are set to clash in a Group B preliminary hockey game at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Saturday at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, Italy. Sweden enters this game desperate to bounce back from a tough defeat suffered at the hands of Finland, while Slovakia sits atop the Group B standings with two straight victories, including a statement win over Finland. Before the puck is dropped in Milan, you will find my Sweden vs Slovakia prediction below.
Pick: Slovakia +2.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: 3/5
Slovakia has surged out of the gate at these Olympic Games, winning both of its first two Group B games. A 4-1 victory over Finland was the result of a potent offensive effort by Juraj Slafkovsky and solid goaltending, followed by a tighter 3-2 decision over Italy that kept them unbeaten in regulation. Those results have them in first place in the group with a chance to finish atop the standings with a point here. Sweden’s trajectory has been less consistent. After an opening win over Italy, Sweden fell 4-1 to Finland in a game where their defense and goaltending struggled to contain a physical Finnish attack. The Swedes need a strong performance to secure a trip to the next round of competition.
Goaltending will be pivotal. Slovakia’s netminders saw a heavy workload against Italy and Finland and delivered strong performances, particularly in the tournament opener, where tthey faced nearly 40 shots and limited Finland to one goal. Sweden’s crease situation is less settled after conceding four goals to Finland. Questions remain whether Sweden will stick with their starter from that game or pivot to another option. How each team’s goalies handle early pressure could set the tone for scoring opportunities and edge in the middle periods.
Sweden boasts a deep roster filled with NHL-level talent that is expected to generate offense even against stifling defenses. Top forward William Nylander has been involved in scoring chances and could be a favorable betting option if Sweden draws penalties and controls possession. On Slovakia’s side, Juraj Slafkovsky has been a standout, contributing multiple goals and assists through the first two games and representing a thorn in opposing defenses. Secondary contributors like Libor Hudacek and Martin Fehervary have also chipped in, helping keep Slovakia competitive in close games.
Score Projection: Sweden 5 – Slovakia 3 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Sweden 70%, Slovakia 30% ATS PRO
This matchup carries significant implications for group seeding and confidence heading into the Olympic knockout rounds. Sweden should come away with the win to make sure that they aren't eliminated. But I think that Slovakia will cover the puckline as a 2.5-goal underdog based on what we've seen from them so far in this tournament.
